DESCRIPTION

As a Data Engineering Manager III in Data Infrastructure and Strategy group, you will play a pivotal role in building data platform to centralize data access and converging existing platforms within the Data Infrastructure and Strategy group. This role will drive the transformation of the data ecosystem, improving how Operations Finance teams access, analyze, and leverage data across the organization. The successful candidate will execute the 3-Year Data Infrastructure Modernisation strategy, transitioning systems to frameworks built on data lakehouse architecture and cloud-first designs. Leadership will be crucial in navigating the complex landscape of interdependent tools and platforms, many developed concurrently by other Amazon teams. The role requires managing ambiguity, making strategic decisions with incomplete information, and adapting plans as new internal products evolve. Strong cross-functional partnerships and the ability to influence roadmaps and align dependencies are essential for integrating emerging technologies into modernization efforts. This position demands technical expertise, strategic thinking, and collaborative leadership to shape an agile, scalable data infrastructure that empowers faster, more informed decision-making across the organization.

Key job responsibilities

1. Lead the execution of the 3-Year Data Infrastructure Modernisation strategy, overseeing the development of the modern data lakehouse architecture.

2. Develop and implement comprehensive plans for deprecating legacy data platforms and migrating to the central data platform, ensuring minimal operational disruption.

3. Manage a team of data engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, engineering excellence and achieving more with less.

4. Navigate complex interdependencies between tools and platforms developed by various teams, aligning these components with modernization efforts. Regularly assess progress and state of dependent work streams, pivot migration strategy as needed.

5. Foster strong partnerships with other engineering teams, influencing their roadmaps to ensure alignment with the central data platform strategy.

6. Lead cross-functional initiatives to integrate emerging technologies and new internal products into the modernization roadmap.

7. Drive the evaluation and adoption of data analytics AWS services and internal Amazon products, making strategic "Build vs Buy" decisions.

Your typical day is dynamic and multifaceted, balancing strategic initiatives with day-to-day operational demands. You're continuously balancing the need to drive forward strategic objectives with the requirement to support ongoing operations and handle unexpected issues and escalations. Your role requires you to be adaptable, make quick decisions, and maintain a broad perspective on how individual tasks and challenges fit into the larger goals of your data infrastructure modernization initiative.

About the team

WW Operations Finance Standardization and Automation improves customer experience and business outcomes across Amazon Operations Finance through innovative technical solutions, standardization and automation of processes and use of modern data analytics technology.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in processing data with a massively parallel technology (such as Redshift, Teradata, Netezza, Spark or Hadoop based big data solution)
  • Experience in relational database technology (such as Redshift, Oracle, MySQL or MS SQL)
  • Experience in developing and operating large-scale data structures for business intelligence analytics (using ETL/ELT processes)
  • Experience in data engineering
  • Experience managing a data or BI team
  • Experience communicating to senior management and customers verbally and in writing
  • Experience leading and influencing the data or BI strategy of your team or organization
  • Experience in at least one modern scripting or programming language, such as Python, Java, Scala, or NodeJS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with change management in large, complex organizations.
  • Knowledge of machine learning and AI technologies and their integration with data platforms.
  • Familiarity with Amazon's internal data products and ecosystems.
  • Track record of driving adoption of cutting-edge technologies in enterprise environments.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $153,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $264,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
