The pay range is $113,000.00 - $203,000.00

Pay is based on several factors which vary based on position. These include labor markets and in some instances may include education, work experience and certifications. Product Teams at Target are accountable for the delivery of business outcomes enabled through technology and analytic products that are easy to use, easily maintained and highly reliable. Product teams have one shared backlog that is inclusive of all product, technology, discovery and design work.

As a Sr Product Manager for Search Retrieval, you will be responsible for enhancing the foundational layers of the search experience on our digital platforms. Your role focuses on developing and implementing strategies that optimize how we retrieve product candidates in response to user queries. The goal is to ensure our systems return a broad, accurate, and contextually relevant set of results. You will work across lexical, semantic, and hybrid retrieval methods to optimize the search pipeline for high recall, low latency, and readiness for downstream ranking. Success in this role is measured by your ability to improve retrieval quality, system performance, and overall impact on guest engagement and conversion.

As a Senior Product Manager, you will operate within the product model and collaborate with cross-functional teams to define a comprehensive product strategy, roadmap, and key business objectives (OKRs) focused on scalable and effective retrieval systems. You will combine deep product understanding, retrieval system expertise, customer insights, and performance data to drive direction. You will lead a team of engineers, machine learning practitioners, and data scientists to build core infrastructure and capabilities that power the entire search experience.

You will serve as the voice of the product for retrieval across the organization, ensuring your team is aligned to the most impactful work and that stakeholders have the clarity and support they need. You will maintain a roadmap and backlog focused on addressing retrieval gaps, improving index performance, enhancing recall quality, and enabling experimentation. Your prioritization will support robust query coverage, efficient candidate generation, and reliable foundations for ranking and personalization.

You will foster open communication across technical and business teams, promote a culture of urgency and high standards, and guide the team through complex trade-offs related to system architecture, data quality, and model integration. You will also partner closely with adjacent product areas such as ranking, query understanding, taxonomy, and generative AI to deliver a cohesive and effective search experience.

About you:

  • Four-year degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Data Science, AI/ML, or a related field
  • 6+ years of product management experience or equivalent domain experience, particularly in search, information retrieval, or natural language processing
  • Strong understanding of statistical methods, machine learning algorithms, and semantic understanding techniques
  • Experience with technology and ability to facilitate communication between business and technology teams
  • Experience working in an agile environment (e.g., user stories, iterative development, scrum teams, sprints, personas)
  • Ability to lead a body of work with cross-functional partners
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Proven ability to collaborate with engineers, UX designers, data scientists, and business stakeholders

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
