Job Summary

The Charge Nurse is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the emergency department, ensuring quality patient care is delivered in a supportive and professional environment. This position combines clinical nursing responsibilities with leadership, mentorship, and administrative oversight. The Charge Nurse utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care and supports the team in delivering exceptional, restorative, and supportive health care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Supervision

  • Provide leadership to ensure effective patient care delivery.
  • Supervise and mentor nursing staff, offering guidance and direction during shifts.
  • Assign tasks and patient loads based on acuity and staff competency.
  • Evaluate staff performance and provide constructive feedback to nursing leadership.
  • Conduct documentation reviews and participate in staff performance evaluations.
  • Manage daily administrative duties including schedules and assignments.
  • Mentor and train new hires, identifying and supporting staff as preceptors.
  • Address conflicts and resolve issues among staff and patients, including de-escalation.
  • Foster collaboration and communication across healthcare teams.
  • Promote a safe and supportive team environment.
  • Adjust personal work schedule to meet staffing needs when necessary.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and uphold confidentiality standards.
  • Adapt to change and manage workflow effectively.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and standards of care.
  • Stay current on patient documentation requirements.
  • Assist with direct patient care and department needs as necessary.

Patient Care and Management

  • Regularly monitor patient conditions and implement appropriate interventions.
  • Provide education and emotional support to patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Oversee patient admissions, transfers, and discharges for safe care transitions.
  • Ensure care for boarded patients aligns with their admission status.
  • Monitor and document incoming transfers from other facilities.
  • Collaborate with physicians and external facilities for transfers and discharges.
  • Communicate with nursing supervisor about bed flow and census surges.
  • Follow up with patients regarding medication changes and care needs.
  • Process provider orders from message pool.
  • Respond to emergencies and initiate necessary support measures.
  • Coordinate with EMS, law enforcement, and agencies during emergencies.
  • Lead patient flow and resource management during disasters (MCEs/MCIs).

Other Responsibilities

  • Ensure availability and functionality of emergency equipment (crash cart, emergency box, cord checks).
  • Monitor supply levels and report equipment needs to supervisors.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized emergency department environment.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with staff, providers, departments, patients, and families.

Qualifications

Education, Experience, and Licensing

  • Registered Nurse with a current license issued by the Mississippi Board of Nursing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
