Mercy Health Saint Mary's Cardiac Monitor Technicians will be working within the Central Monitoring Unit. This position includes monitoring of heart rhythms. This position also requires a large amount of phone communication. CMTs must have well developed communication skills as CMTs are collaborating with physicians and nursing staff for questions and clarification of monitoring questions. Ideal candidates possess skills such as self-direction, initiative, accountability, problem solving and teamwork.

Position Summary:

The Cardiac Monitor Technician continually observes patients’ electrocardiographic patterns and accurately recognizes and reports abnormalities and arrhythmias to Registered Nurse. The Cardiac Monitor Technician is also responsible for completing documentation according to hospital policy in logbook. This position does not include hands on patient care. Cardiac Monitor Techs will be located in a department stationed at a computer for 12 hour shifts.

What Cardiac Monitor Technicians will do:

  • Observes ECG monitors, recognizes abnormalities, trends or technically inadequate results, troubleshoots and/or reports these results to appropriate nursing personnel
  • Answers alarms immediately. Implements emergency protocols for life-threatening and potentially life-threatening dysrhythmias
  • Assures communication between Monitor Tech and caregiver available at all times.
  • Documents hourly on each patient rhythm strip: rhythm, rate, dysrhythmia, ST segment abnormalities
  • Writes preliminary interpretation of the rhythm strip for the RN to validate (i.e.. PR intervals, QRS duration, QT intervals and rate)

  • Collaborates with nursing staff for questions and clarification of monitoring questions

What Cardiac Monitor Technicians will need:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Previous experience in an acute care hospital is desirable. Previous EKG, 12 lead EKG and patient care experience highly preferred
  • Successfully complete initial EKG competency assessment and all subsequent assessments.
  • Ability to trust own judgment and implement emergency protocols when necessary.
  • Ability to effectively problem solve situations to achieve the desired outcome.
  • Able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups representing divers perspectives
