Position Summary:

As a member of the Student Life team, the Operations Manager is instrumental in the management of the Brower Student Center. They directly impact the daily operations and services of the Brower Student Center through the hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of over 40 structured and tiered student staff positions including Student Managers, Building Assistants, and Game Room Assistants. This includes troubleshooting challenges that involve student staffing including coordinating building and room setups, staff absenteeism, shift changes, and tardiness, and cultivating and advancing the student staff culture of helpfulness and positivity. The operations manager monitors, assesses, and improves building function, processes, and general efficiencies. They have responsibilities for Building appearance, inventory, function, and evolution. This position requires creativity, initiative, and follow through while working collaboratively with others in the department, division, and college. This position follows standard business hours, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. However, to support the wide range of events held in the Brower Student Center beyond regular college hours, flexibility is essential. Work hours will vary throughout the academic year and summer to provide additional support for external camps, conferences, and events taking place. Occasional evening and weekend shifts are required.

Main Responsibilities:

Student Staff:

  • Develop and refine a comprehensive student staffing plan to meet the needs of the BSC area.
  • Develop and maintain standard student staffing schedules and respond to staffing challenges and conflicts.
  • Utilize the Daily Report staffing requests to schedule additional student staffing as needed for student, internal, and external client bookings.
  • Administers scheduling and payroll software and submits payroll approvals for directly supervised student staff.
  • Create marketing, applications, and hiring processes that align with staffing plan and solicit feedback and involvement from BSC professional staff team.
  • Serve as lead in the development of training schedule and content that reflects best practice in College Union operations.
  • Utilize the TCNJ Student Affairs Co-Curricular Experience outcomes to manage student staff development, including performance evaluation processes, recognition initiatives, provide developmental feedback, and address immediate disciplinary and performance concerns.Consults with Associate Director for Student Life on potential terminations and disciplinary plans.
  • Primary supervision of student staff with daily operations in carrying out building functions including operating the information desk, operating the game room, providing customer service, completing event setups, and performing routine maintenance.
  • Utilizing best practice and working to maintain a culture of learning, helpfulness, and positivity, identify and implement ongoing training opportunities and training materials.
  • Maintains statistics on employment practices and staff demographics.

Building Operations:

  • Responsible for the daily functions of the Brower Student Center by monitoring the building appearance and functionality and responds to immediate risk and safety concerns.
  • Develop recommendations to enhance BSC processes, layouts, and/or procedures to reduce risk, maximize user satisfaction, and proactively plan to meet the evolving needs of students.

Evening Hours Event Support:

  • Serve as the primary student staff supervisor and event support professional for events and programs held in the BSC during evenings and weekends. In coordination with supervisor, assess on-site needs based on staff capabilities, event requirements, and program needs.
  • Troubleshoot and respond to challenges as they arise. Follow up on event challenges with BSC staff and/or appropriate campus partners.

Game Room:

  • Provide visionary oversight of the Game Room and programmatic efforts in the Game Room, including creating an overall Game Room plan for events, equipment upgrades, and maintenance.

Inventory:

  • Maintains inventory of the Brower Student Center furniture, audiovisual, and other event equipment.
  • Updates furniture and audiovisual equipment resources in the event management system and notifies Event Coordinators of immediate changes when necessary.
  • Works with Facilities on repair of equipment and Information Technology on audio visual and technology-based equipment ensuring equipment is functional and up to date, and assisting in end user needs.
  • Monitor equipment, furniture, and other item age and conditions as well as warranty coverage to help inform asset repair and renewal cycles.
  • Investigates, evaluates, and recommends equipment for purchase.

BSC Sponsored Programming:

  • Responsible for planning, marketing, and facilitating Brower Student Center sponsored programs that increase and enhance student utilization of the BSC.
  • Develop and assess progress toward those goals relative to budgetary costs/implications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years experience working in College Union/Student Center management or related field.
  • A Master's degree may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to modify communication based on the intended audience. Highly developed organization and time management skills, as evidenced by successful management of multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Technical proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft and ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software. Proficiency with EMS event management system or other equivalent software (25Live, Astra Schedule, etc.) preferred. Basic knowledge of gaming consoles or demonstrated interest to learn and research gaming technology is required.
  • Knowledge of the developmental needs of college students. The ability to apply this knowledge to both the supervision of student workers with an emphasis on personal/professional development and advising student clients to ensure successful planning and execution of their events.
  • Knowledge of customer service philosophies and ability to assist clients to ensure a positive experience with the Brower Student Center. Ability to check-in with clients at events within Brower Student Center.
  • Position hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30-4:30pm. Ability to adjust schedule to work different weekly hours and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education or related field is strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience supervising undergraduate student staff
