Position Overview

The Data Architect - Principal is a senior-level role within the Digital Data Services (DDS). This position is responsible for defining and implementing the enterprise data architecture strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals, and leveraging frameworks such as the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) or Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF). The ideal candidate will translate business requirements into technical specifications, ensuring that our data architecture aligns with organizational goals and supports data-driven decision-making.

Note, this is a remote position with the ideal candidate residing near one of our office site in Colorado Springs, CO., Dayton, OH., Alexandria, VA., or Huntsville, AL.

Role and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and implement data architecture leveraging Microsoft Azure services, including Azure SQL Database, Azure Synapse Analytics, and Azure Data Lake, while optimizing storage and retrieval processes for performance and scalability while adhering to DevSecOps principles.
  • Develop scalable data models and integration pipelines while working closely with data engineers, DevSecOps engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to align architecture with organizational goals.
  • Maintain clear documentation of data architecture, pipelines, and governance processes for sustainability and knowledge transfer.
  • Monitor data pipeline performance to troubleshoot issues and implement improvements, while identifying opportunities to streamline data management processes, enhance data accuracy, consistency, and availability, and identify and mitigate potential security risks in data pipelines and storage system.
  • Ensure that security measures, such as encryption, access controls, and vulnerability management, are embedded into the design and implementation of data systems.

Required Experience:

  • Expertise in Azure services like Azure Synapse, Data Lake, and Data Factory for building scalable data architectures and managing data workflows. Knowledge of Azure security practices, including data encryption, access control, and compliance with data governance frameworks.
  • Proficiency in database management, programming languages (e.g., Python, SQL, Java) and familiarity with data modeling tools such as Cameo, EASparx, etc., ETL processes, and Azure cloud platforms.
  • Understanding medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold layers) for organizing data in Azure.
  • Ability to create conceptual, logical, and physical data models ensuring alignment with business requirements and technical specifications utilizing United Architecture Framework (UAF), Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) and/or associated frameworks to create structured architectural views that address stakeholder concerns and ensure compliance with organizational standards.
  • Proficiency in Unified Modeling Language (UML) and Systems Modeling Language (SysML) for creating diagrams and workflows.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum 8 years experience required; 14 years experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex data issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Exhibits technical/operational proficiency in solving very complex problems.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps tools and practices, such as CI/CD pipelines with integrated security checks, vulnerability scanning, and automated compliance testing

Travel:

  • Occasional travel to MTSI offices and events throughout country

Clearance:

Must be able to obtain Secret Clearance.
