Job Summary:
The Shuttle Driver is responsible for providing safe, reliable transportation for Colby College students, faculty, and staff within the Waterville area, operating vehicles ranging from a mini-van to a 25-passenger bus. Drivers may also be assigned to special event transportation as needed. In addition to driving duties, the Shuttle Driver supports campus safety by responding to service calls, de-escalating incidents on the shuttle, communicating via radio, and assisting with basic security functions. The Shuttle Driver is also responsible for conducting daily vehicle inspections, performing basic troubleshooting, and ensuring the cleanliness and general upkeep of assigned vehicles. This role requires timely response to requests, enforcement of College policies, and effective collaboration with both the Security team and members of a diverse campus community. An active Maine Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) endorsement is required.

- Drive shuttle bus between Colby College and Downtown Waterville as assigned.
- Respond to fire and security alarms at the off-campus residence hall
- Provide lockout services for the off-campus residence hall
- Enforce College policies and complete necessary reports and paperwork
- Maintain an alertness for suspicious activity during shift
- Manage incidents as necessary at the off-campus residence hall
- Provide informational assistance and promote good public relations
- Participate in on-the-job training
- Attend scheduled staff meetings and training sessions
- Display exemplary customer service skills and ensure positive interactions with the community
- Maintain an active Maine CDL with passenger endorsement.
- Act as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as part of the Security Team.
Position Qualifications
Education and/or experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; professional coursework or post-secondary education a plus
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with P (Passenger Bus Vehicle) endorsement required and must meet Colby’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements
- Must present a neat, clean, and professional image
- Ability to be reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfill obligations
- Additional training and certifications in First Aid, CPR and First Responder Training preferred, although Colby College will provide certification and updates
- Must meet CDL federal requirements, including random drug and alcohol testing
- Well-developed public relations skills; able to perform duties in a flexible, non-confrontational environment; utilize diplomacy and tact in dealing with sensitive situations
- Ability to work independently and sit and drive for long periods of time
- Effectively operate a variety of equipment including portable/mobile radios and computers
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to complete clear, concise, and accurate logs, reports, and other documentation

- To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, an employee must be able to maintain appropriate confidentiality with regard to student and employee data, documents, FERPA data,issues, etc., and respect privacy needs of employees and past employees with regard to the same.
- The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required.
- There may be occurrences of employees, past employees, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations.
- While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the office space as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities.
- There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged personal computer use which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor.
- An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds to perform essential position functions.
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focus quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasks as well.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds.
