The University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC) is a $70M initiative in North Bethesda funded by Montgomery County and the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State. The UM-IHC aims to build a learning health system for the State of Maryland that leverages advanced computation and medical innovation to advance health equity and improve quality of life state-wide. At the IHC, scientists from across two University of Maryland campuses and a statewide health system collaborate with industry, commercialize health care technologies, and develop & test health care interventions to simultaneously improve health outcomes and contribute to Maryland’s economy.

The IHC is currently recruiting for a full-time contractual Bioinformatics Software Engineer II position.

THIS POSITION IS PHYSICALLY LOCATED IN NORTH BETHESDA, MARYLAND.

Primary Duties:

  • With minimal supervision of Primary Investigator and engineers, develop and maintain software and workflows that interact with or extracts data from medical imaging systems and multi-omics platforms.
  • Contributes to projects intended to develop tools, protocols, or structured methods for organizing, processing, and presenting medical imaging data for diagnostic and research purposes; overall to accomplish specific imaging informatics and analytical objectives, including semi-automated pipelines for imaging data preparation and imaging annotation.
  • Collaborate with software engineer(s) on system integration and database connectivity aspects, including the implementation of comprehensive logging and tracking systems for audit purposes and HIPAA compliance.
  • Support the implementation of annotation frameworks for medical imaging datasets by either assisting with manual annotation workflows alongside radiologists OR contributing to the development of automated annotation methods in collaboration with the software engineer and data scientist, ensuring consistency and scalability across projects.
  • Transform and prepare medical imaging data into formats suitable for downstream analysis, working closely with the data scientist to ensure data integrity and validation, and with the software engineer to ensure compatibility with downstream machine learning applications.
  • Participate in multiple ongoing projects simultaneously, particularly focusing on priority projects designated by the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing medical imaging team in collaboration with the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, and work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team including physicians, imaging informaticists, data scientists, and software engineers.
  • Document workflows, methodologies, and pipeline processes. Coordinate and conduct training sessions for pipeline users and contributors.
  • Deliver bi-weekly progress reports to the medical imaging team, with quarterly milestone reviews.
  • Participate in research dissemination activities including manuscript preparation, publications, and grant submissions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelors in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering

or related field.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in bioinformatics tool use, software development, or analysis of biological data.

Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Hiring Range: $70,397 - $95,500, Commensurate with education and experience
