Job Summary
Synechron is seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer to design, develop, and manage mainframe applications within our technology ecosystem. This role involves handling end-to-end tasks related to mainframe systems, ensuring seamless deployment, maintenance, and performance optimization. As a core member of the technical team, your expertise will contribute to delivering reliable, high-quality mainframe solutions that support operational excellence and business continuity.
Software Requirements
Required Skills:
- Strong proficiency in Mainframe technologies including COBOL, Easytrieve, TSO, JCL, and VSAM
- Knowledge of mainframe deployment processes and system management
- Experience with mainframe system debugging, testing, and handling batch and online processing
Preferred Skills:
- Awareness of modern mainframe tools or integration with cloud or distributed systems (not mandatory)
- Familiarity with related middleware or subsystems, such as CICS or DB2, is a plus
Overall Responsibilities
- Develop, test, and maintain mainframe applications primarily using COBOL, Easytrieve, JCL, and VSAM
- Handle end-to-end execution of assigned tasks, including system configuration, deployment, and troubleshooting
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize system performance and ensure high availability of mainframe applications
- Contribute to system migrations, upgrades, and process improvements
- Ensure adherence to organizational standards, security policies, and best practices in mainframe operations
- Document technical processes, deployment procedures, and system configurations
- Provide technical support during production incidents and implement fixes swiftly
- Support audit processes and maintain compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements
Technical Skills (By Category)
Programming Languages:
- Essential: COBOL, Easytrieve
- Preferred: Knowledge of assembler or other mainframe languages
Databases / Data Management:
- Experience with VSAM files and datasets
- Basic understanding of DB2 or other mainframe databases is advantageous
Cloud Technologies:
- Not required but familiarity with cloud or hybrid systems is a plus
Frameworks and Libraries:
- No specific frameworks; focus on mainframe environment tools and utilities
Development Tools & Methodologies:
- TSO/ISPF, JCL, FTP, ESP, Change Management tools for versioning and deployment
- Knowledge of ITIL or other operational frameworks is preferred
Security Protocols:
- Understanding of mainframe security controls and access management
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 6+ years of hands-on mainframe application development and support experience
- Proven track record of handling end-to-end mainframe application deployment and maintenance
- Experience working in environments with high operational demands and strict compliance standards
- Familiarity with project lifecycle and change management processes for mainframe systems
Day-to-Day Activities
- Analyze and develop mainframe programs using COBOL, Easytrieve, JCL, and VSAM files
- Manage application deployment, configuration, and system updates
- Troubleshoot technical issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions
- Participate in daily team meetings, status updates, and project planning sessions
- Collaborate with infrastructure, QA, and business teams to ensure system stability and performance
- Maintain technical documentation and support compliance audits
- Provide ongoing operational support and participate in system upgrades or migration activities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Certifications or formal training in mainframe technologies or related areas are a plus
