Global Safety and Health Coordinator

Position Summary:

The Global Safety and Health Coordinator is a key contributor responsible for supporting the health, safety, and wellbeing of all Vanderbilt University travelers. This position supports the Assistant Director of Global Safety and Health and serves on the Vanderbilt Incident Response for Travel (VIRT) team. This position will focus primarily on supporting undergraduate students, student organizations, and scholarship travel in pre-departure training and resource development. When needed, this position will assist the efforts of the Assistant Director of Global Safety and Security with graduate and professional students as well as faculty and staff. The nature of global safety and health is that it is a fast-paced field that requires constant innovation to meet the evolving needs of the VU community traveler. The coordinator role supports the Assistant Director of Global Safety and Health with long range projects, pre-departure resources, and 24/7 emergency response.

About the Work Unit:

International Experiences and Global Learning (IEGL) is dedicated to fostering global citizenship through a wide range of enriching international programs and initiatives. This unit encompasses the key areas of: Study Abroad, Study Away, Faculty-Led Programs, and Global Safety and Health. Combined, they create a holistic support system that promotes intellectual and personal growth and wellbeing through global experiences. Emphasizing excellence, engagement, and curiosity, these programs equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an interconnected world. IEGL works collaboratively with faculty and staff across the campus and with providers and partners based in the U.S. and abroad.

IEGL is organized under the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (OUE) in the Office of the Provost. Access to global experiences is a key component of the larger institutional vision to encourage students to reach beyond the classroom to drive their own intellectual and social growth.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Provide guidance to partner offices regarding student domestic and international travel experiences – Study Abroad, Ingram, Immersion Vanderbilt, etc.
  • Maintain relationship with Risk and Insurance Management colleagues
  • Assist in conducting risk assessment and related guidance for travel experiences
  • Conduct pre-departure orientations in person and support the maintenance of the online pre-departure orientation in Brightspace
  • Serve on the Vanderbilt Incident Response for Travel (VIRT) team on rotation with Assistant Director of Global Safety and Health and VU Travel Manager
  • Conduct outreach to campus partner offices
  • Assist in the maintenance of databases for incidents, vetted programs and partners, etc.
  • Update the Global Safety website regularly to reflect current travel safety guidance

Supervisory Relationships:

This position does not have supervisory responsibility, this position reports administratively and functionally to the Assistant Director of Global Safety and Health.

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 1-5 years of work experience, particularly in higher education or experience in a relevant field (study abroad, student program management, emergency coordination, international travel, and security)
  • An equivalent combination of education, relevant military experience, and relevant skills is also acceptable.
  • Experience and Skills:
  • Foreign language competency and/or time spent studying/living/working abroad is preferred.
  • Experience with advising student groups and program management is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask in a fast-paced high-performing work environment is preferred.
  • Ability to take initiative and desire to innovate is preferred.
  • Demonstrated record of sound judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities as reflected in the ability to remain calm in crisis is preferred.
