What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2/3, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Reliability Engineering Technologist 2/3 reports to the MSS-APT Group Leader but will be deployed to DP-DO. This position is responsible for contributing and guiding the reliability program for the maintenance of equipment, machinery, and buildings withing the DP portfolio. This position will help develop maintenance procedures and reliability processes relevant to facility maintenance activities. Additional responsibilities will be to contribute and help build the Predictive Maintenance (PM) Program for DP at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Reliability Engineering Technologist 2 ($94,500 - $154,600)

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Assists in the development and refinement of preventive maintenance strategies using system performance data, technician feedback, and failure history to improve asset reliability.
• Structures and maintains asset hierarchy and master data within the CMMS.
• Creates, revises, and validates technical drawings and documentation using CAD tools; actively participates in design reviews and maintenance readiness assessments.
• Supports equipment configuration, upgrades, and reviews of vendor technical proposals.
• Evaluates PM effectiveness and scheduling in collaboration with planners, recommending improvements based on work history and equipment criticality.
• Leads small tasks or workstreams within engineering projects and serves as a technical resource/mentor to junior technologists and maintenance personnel and lower level staff.
• Uses CMMS and analytical software to monitor equipment performance, generate technical documentation, and communicate findings to engineering and operations teams.

Reliability Engineering Technologist 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level this position is expected to:

• Plan and schedule detailed phases of reliability work focused on improving the performance and availability of mechanical and electrical systems.
• Lead root cause analysis (RCA), FMEA, and other diagnostics to resolve chronic equipment issues.
• Develop and refine equipment maintenance strategies, including condition-based monitoring (vibration, thermography, ultrasound, etc.).
• Prepare equipment specifications and reliability requirements for new acquisitions and modifications.
• Perform statistical analysis of equipment performance data to assess trends, identify bad actors, and prioritize reliability improvements. Utilizes tools such as CMMS, reliability databases, and software.
• Coordinate engineering efforts between specialties, maintenance, operations, vendors, and clients. Ensures consistent implementation of reliability practices across disciplines and projects.
• Provide technical support for project planning and execution related to equipment upgrades, system modifications, and lifecycle management. Reviews cost estimates, schedules, and resource requirements.
• Assist in on-the-job training and mentoring of personnel in reliability principles and tools.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Working knowledge of PM development principles, maintenance task analysis, and failure mode mitigation.
• Basic understanding of asset hierarchy standards (e.g., ISO 14224 or similar) and experience managing asset master data in a CMMS.
• Sound knowledge of mathematical and engineering principles used in evaluating equipment and system performance.
• Knowledge of maintenance work planning and control processes.
• Understanding of industry standards, Laboratory protocols, and/or relevant DOE/NNSA compliance requirements.
• Proficiency in technical documentation, reporting, and use of software tools for engineering and maintenance analysis.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

• Expert knowledge of reliability engineering methodologies (e.g., FMEA, RCM, RCA, etc.).
• Strong background in equipment failure mechanisms across rotating equipment, electrical systems, and mechanical assemblies.
• Proficiency in data collection tools and analysis software (e.g., CMMS, Excel, etc.).
• Advanced understanding of maintenance strategy optimization (preventive, predictive, and condition-based).
• Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., SMRP, ISO 55000, API, NFPA) and DOE/NNSA regulatory compliance.
• Solid foundation in engineering mathematics and statistics for reliability modeling and analysis.

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 2 level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 3 level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience using Asset Suites.
• Active Q Clearance.
• Certifications as a Certified Reliability Leader or Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This position will be 4 10-hour shifts Monday-Thursday.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

• Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
