Position Summary

This position’s primary role is to take care of the day-to-day operations of the undergraduate instructional physics laboratories (UILs) in the Science Learning Center, both in the teaching lab room and the SCALE-UP room. Assist with set-up of UILs in the Physics Bldg. as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Able to use a computer and basic software (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel). Organized and detail oriented. Able to do minor mechanical and electrical repairs. Machine shop experience.

Lift up to 30 lbs.; travel between buildings on campus as help may be needed in the Physics Bldg. at times.

Duties/Responsibilities

Responsible for undergraduate instructional laboratories (UILs) offered by the department in both the teaching lab room and the SCALE-UP room in the SLC, including set-up and take-down of equipment for laboratory classes, and maintenance of equipment:

  • Set up and take down equipment required for weekly UILS in a timely fashion.
  • Keep equipment in good working condition, making necessary repairs and ordering necessary replacement parts.
  • Keep equipment storage areas organized.

Duties/Responsibilities

Responsible for lecture demonstration equipment used by physics and astronomy instructors in the large lecture rooms:

  • Set up and take down equipment as requested by faculty members.
  • Keep the demonstration equipment in a good working condition, making necessary repairs and ordering necessary replacement parts.
  • Maintain lecture demonstration equipment room in good order

Duties/Responsibilities

Responsible for assisting the Laboratory Professional:

  • Assist the Lab Professional in the physics building when requested.
  • Assume duties of Lab Professional when he/she is on leave.
  • Assist with annual inventory for the department.
  • Assist with Course Sectioning.

Percentage of time 15

Duties/Responsibilities

Responsible (with the Franklin OIT personnel) for all of the computers, peripherals and software used in the UILs:

  • Should manage the day-to-day operation and use of the undergraduate laboratory computing resources.
  • Should recognize conditions requiring the assistance of the FOIT, and seek such help when it is needed.

Duties/Responsibilities

Responsible for maintaining the undergraduate teaching laboratory rooms in Physics and SLC:

  • Check rooms on a daily basis and reorganize equipment on tables if necessary.
  • Clean lab tables and white boards on a weekly basis.
  • Submit work orders for any repairs to FMD that need to be done to the room including plumbing, electrical, and structural problems.
