The Baltimore Banner is a Pulitzer award-winning, nonprofit newsroom founded to bring high-quality local journalism to the Baltimore metro area. We’re looking for a Data Editor who’s passionate about turning raw data into powerful journalism, engaging visualizations, and innovative digital storytelling. If you love collaborating across teams, experimenting with new tools, and shaping stories that make an impact, we want to hear from you!
What You’ll Do:
- Lead the development and execution of impactful, data-driven stories and projects, collaborating with the visuals team, editors, and reporters
- Establish collaborative processes to support the newsroom with data analysis, visualization, interactives, and graphics
- Oversee and edit visual and data work for journalistic quality, accuracy, visual clarity, interaction design, and functionality
- Mentor and develop data journalists, visualizers, and developers, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous growth
- Stay up to date on AI and how we can leverage it to improve or speed up our work
- Advocate for innovative data and digital storytelling in the newsroom and encourage greater levels of data literacy at The Banner
- Develop new data products that will serve Banner readers and help drive subscriptions and audience, collaborating with the product team when necessary
What You Bring:
- 5+ years of experience producing ambitious, data-driven journalism, ideally in a leadership role
- Proven management skills or clear potential for leading and mentoring a team of talented journalists
- Strong editorial judgment and instincts for identifying compelling stories, along with the skills to bring them to life through data and visual storytelling
- Expertise in analyzing complex data sets, including geospatial data, using programming languages like Python and R
- Commitment to rigorous journalism, ensuring statistical significance and accuracy
- Excellent collaboration skills, especially with partners who may not have a technical background
- Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, maintaining high standards under deadline pressure
Salary Range: $100,000 - $125,000. Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by several factors, including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations. We constantly review all teammate pay to ensure a great compensation package that is fair and equitable across the board.
