What You Will Do

Detonator Production (DP) Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce War Reserve (WR) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate (ALDWP). DP is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe and reliable WR products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management orgs to deliver on challenging National security objectives. DP upholds vigorous teamwork, personal integrity, respectful workplace, and continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety and security.

DP is seeking a Manufacturing Manager (First Line Manager) to lead a team within the Production Planning & Control Group (DP-5). The Manufacturing Manager will report to the DP-5 Group Leader and lead improvement initiatives around production planning, metric development, business workflow standardization and integrating cross-functional activities to ensure timely delivery of the highest quality detonation products and services to our customers.

DP-5's scope within the DP enterprise includes:

Production planning and control to meet customer milestones and deliverables, ensuring work authorization is effectively integrated across the Division to meet production commitments.

Producing efficient manufacturing floor schedules and monitoring production metrics to ensure performance.

Collaboration across the Detonator Production Enterprise facilitating communication and integrating planning activities including production programmatic work across multiple programs, research and development activities, and facility and equipment maintenance requirements.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Facilitate cross-functional planning coordination meetings, and provide tactical direction to planning and scheduling functions
  • Planning, organizing, and defining strategic objectives.
  • Establishing scope, schedule, and budget through work package development, resource and performance management
  • Ensures direct daily oversight of work, workers and the work environment. Recognition as the safety responsible line manager.
  • Ongoing communications with line management reporting on work status, deliverables and commitments.
  • Effective time management skills and the ability to deal effectively with changing priorities and conflicting demands.
  • Effective teamwork in accomplishing objectives, including mentoring and motivating peers.
  • Providing financial stewardship over budget, procurement, time and labor, travel, and property.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership: Demonstrated record of successful manufacturing leadership and proven ability in supervising, resolving conflicts, administering discipline, mentoring, team building, managing staff requirements, motivating employees, and developing personnel such as students and/or early career scientists and engineers.

Knowledge and Expertise: Demonstrated experience in developing work scope, schedules, budgets, and coordinating work activities. Experience planning for and managing tactical execution of work; tracking and reporting progress. Experience performing work in a manufacturing environment and executing work in compliance with facility and regulatory requirements.

Accountability: Experience working with confidential or proprietary information, classified documents or sensitive information.

Communication: Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by internal and/or external interactions, seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications; effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in technical project or program management, including planning, organizing, and resource management.
  • Experience with defining metrics and measures in alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Industry experience using an ERP, MRP and/or MES software within a manufacturing environment to document, plan and control manufacturing processes.
  • Industry experience in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering and/or planning and control functions.
  • Experience or familiarity with Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP)
  • Experience leading or supporting the deployment of new manufacturing software and/or data migration across systems.
  • Formal certifications in Lean/Six Sigma methodologies and/or demonstratable experience applying the tools and concepts or supporting Kaizen events.
  • Experience with materials or processes having radioactive, toxic, pyrophoric, explosive, and/or other health, safety or security hazards.
  • Direct supervision experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Active DOE Q Clearance highly desirable.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
