The Substrate Security team is the dedicated security organization responsible for safeguarding the Microsoft Substrate platform—ensuring it is the most secure collaboration platform in the world. The team drives security posture improvements across engineering, architecture, and operations by influencing and empowering partner teams, building secure-by-default capabilities, and addressing transitive risks across the Substrate collective. Our mission spans proactive hardening, detection, containment, and mitigation, with an emphasis on scalable solutions, automation, and cultural transformation to elevate security standards across the ecosystem.

As a Software Engineer within the team, you will work with a peer group within the organization to harden and protect many aspects of the platform. Taking ideas from the design phase to landing the features across the cloud instances. This opportunity will allow you to work on critical security scenarios on across one of the largest cloud services in the world. You will learn new skills in distributed systems, safe deployment practices, scalability needs and modern approaches to securing product via cutting edge techniques.

  • Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for features
  • Supports identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product feature with oversight.
  • With guidance, learns to create and implement code for a product, service, or feature reusing code as applicable.
  • Assists and learns about breaking down work items into tasks and provides estimation.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) in monitoring system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions for simple problems, and recommends actions to restore system/product/service by following the playbook.
  • Reviews current developments and proactively seeks new knowledge that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.

Required Qualification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • o OR equivalent experience.
  • 1 year of security engineering experience

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in software development in security products.

Software Engineering IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $84,200 - $165,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $109,000 - $180,400 per year.
