Janney is seeking a seasoned Database Administrator (DBA) with deep expertise in both SQL Server and PostgreSQL to support the secure, efficient, and resilient management of enterprise data assets across hybrid environments. This multifaceted role requires strong technical proficiency, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, regulated financial services environment.
As a key member of Janney’s innovation-focused Data Team, the DBA will support mission-critical financial data platforms, contribute to data modernization efforts, and maintain a blend of legacy systems and modern cloud-native platforms. A solid understanding of Snowflake and other cloud technologies is essential, as Janney continues to advance its cloud-first data strategy. Success in this role requires not only deep technical expertise, but also a collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
This is a hybrid position based in Philadelphia, requiring at least one in-office day per week, depending on onboarding, performance, and managerial discretion.
Essential Qualifications
- Hands-on experience administering both SQL Server and PostgreSQL in on-premise and cloud environments
- Strong proficiency in SQL Server database management, including:
- Database design and architecture (schema normalization, indexes, stored procedures)
- Query performance tuning and optimization using execution plans, indexing strategies, and sargable query design
- Backup and recovery strategies, including disaster recovery planning and testing
- High availability solutions, including clustering, replication, and Always On Availability Groups
- Security management (authentication, encryption, and role-based access control)
- Monitoring and troubleshooting using tools like SQL Server Profiler and Extended Events
- Automation using scripting tools such as PowerShell and T-SQL
- Deep understanding of PostgreSQL, including:
- Managing roles, configuration files, permissions, and authentication
- Query planner behavior, vacuum strategies, and index usage
- Tuning via PostgreSQL-specific parameters
- Configuring and managing streaming or logical replication
- Experience managing Red Hat Linux environments supporting PostgreSQL deployments
- Hands-on experience with Snowflake, including SnowSQL, data ingestion, and performance tuning
- Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure Database, or managed PostgreSQL)
- Strong scripting and automation capabilities in Python (or similar)
- Proficiency in observability tools for managing database health, availability, and performance
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills
- Effective communicator with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams
- Experience in financial services or other regulated, data-intensive industries (preferred)
Required Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience)
Required Skills / Competencies
- 5–7+ years of experience as a Database Administrator managing both SQL Server and PostgreSQL systems
- Expertise in SQL Server internals, performance tuning, and backup/recovery
- Experience implementing HA/DR strategies using clustering and Always On
- Advanced skills in PostgreSQL tuning, replication, and operational management
- Practical experience with Snowflake and hybrid/cloud data architectures
- Strong scripting and automation using Python, T-SQL, PowerShell, or Bash
- Familiarity with alerting/monitoring platforms and root cause analysis
- Ability to produce clear technical documentation and follow change management practices
- Strong interpersonal skills, with a focus on teamwork, accountability, and shared success
- Commitment to continuous learning, platform improvement, and staying current on emerging technologies
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases across hybrid environments
- Design and implement scalable, normalized database schemas and high-performing queries
- Proactively tune and optimize database performance for mission-critical workloads
- Develop, test, and document robust backup and disaster recovery strategies
- Configure and support high availability and failover solutions (Always On, clustering, replication)
- Administer PostgreSQL roles, indexes, replication strategies, vacuum/analyze routines
- Enforce security controls, access policies, and data encryption to meet compliance standards
- Automate common operational tasks, deployments, and environment checks
- Monitor overall database health, implement proactive alerts, and troubleshoot production issues
- Work closely with App Dev, Infrastructure, Information Security, and JanneyIQ teams
- Contribute expertise to data migration, cloud adoption, and Snowflake implementation projects
- Actively participate in team collaboration, planning, documentation, and knowledge sharing
