ROLE SUMMARY

Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) at Pfizer is a discipline that applies software engineering principles to infrastructure and operations challenges, with the goal of building scalable, reliable, and efficient systems. As part of the Pfizer Digital’s Cloud Transformation, Infrastructure and Enterprise Solutions (C-TIES) organization, the SRE Manager will lead efforts to engineer reliability into our services through automation, observability, and continuous improvement.

This role is ideal for a hands-on engineering leader who thrives at the intersection of software development and infrastructure operations, and who is passionate about building systems that are not only functional but also observable, maintainable, and resilient.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

This role emphasizes the software engineering aspects of SRE, focusing on:

  • Engineering for Reliability: Design and develop robust, scalable, and fault-tolerant systems that meet defined service level objectives (SLOs). Leverage software to proactively detect, mitigate, and prevent incidents.
  • Automation and Tooling: Lead the development of automation frameworks and self-healing mechanisms that eliminate manual toil, reduce operational overhead, and improve service resilience. Collaborate with platform and product teams to integrate these tools into CI/CD pipelines and runtime environments.
  • Data-Driven Operations: Continuously analyze telemetry, logs, and performance metrics to identify patterns, detect anomalies, and drive service improvements. Use data to inform architectural decisions and prioritize engineering investments.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with development, infrastructure, and business teams to embed reliability into the software development lifecycle (SDLC). Act as a technical liaison to ensure alignment between operational goals and product roadmaps.
  • Cloud-Native Enablement: Champion the use of cloud-native technologies and infrastructure-as-code to build and manage resilient services. Optimize cloud resource usage for performance and cost efficiency.
  • Knowledge Sharing and Leadership: Build and maintain a knowledge base of operational practices, incident retrospectives, and deployment strategies. Mentor engineers and foster a culture of continuous learning and reliability-first thinking.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering or site reliability engineering or similar roles.
  • Proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language and good understanding in the second (e.g., Java, Python, C#, Go, JavaScript).
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as CloudFormation/Terraform etc.
  • Good understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automation frameworks, and DevOps practices.
  • Solid grasp of monitoring, observability, and distributed tracing tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement scalable, fault-tolerant cloud-native architectures and microservices.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate cross-functionally with other teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven mindset.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience mentoring junior engineers.
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Exposure to configuration management (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
  • Knowledge of security best practices in cloud and software development.
  • Experience with telemetry analysis, anomaly detection, and performance tuning.
  • Professional certifications in cloud services (e.g. AWS Certified Solutions Architect) will be considered plus
