This recruitment will be used to fill 16 part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Residence Hall Eco-Representative position for Oregon State University (OSU). Oregon State University’s Eco-Representatives (Eco-Reps) is a cohort-based student leadership development program that transforms resident students into sustainability advocates. Eco-Reps work with multiple departments and organizations on campus and are responsible for advancing and institutionalizing a culture of sustainability in OSU residence facilities.

Position Duties

  • Work 5-8 hours per week during fall, winter, and spring academic quarters
  • Assist with planning, marketing and execution of sustainability programming such as recycling education and assessment, energy conservation, community service projects, Beyond Earth Day activities, among others
  • Utilize multiple strategies in marketing and outreach efforts, including event planning, distributing fliers and posters, posting on bulletin boards and social media, door-to-door interactions with residents
  • Assist in educating residents on the importance of properly returning the reusable take-out food containers used in the Eco2Go program
  • Have the opportunity to coordinate hall compost program by recruiting participants, emptying and cleaning compost bins, weighing and tracking data
  • Report weekly qualitative and quantitative outreach data in an online activity log
  • Engage with UHDS staff and Area Councils
  • Attend weekly meetings with other Eco-Reps, and monthly meetings with Resident Director

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Residence in a UHDS facility on the Corvallis campus
  • Organized, detail oriented, and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to handle compostable and recyclable materials, and be able to lift 25 lbs
  • Access to social media and basic proficiency using it
  • Comfort approaching new people and interacting with large and small groups

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

  • A passion for and interest in sustainability
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholder groups
  • Experience with advertising, marketing, or outreach for projects or organizations
  • Event planning experience
  • Ability to offer positive mentorship, motivation and inspiration for others
  • Federal work-study eligibility
