TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE I, Nuclear Science and Engineering, to research on models on the limitations of models for studying disruptions to critical infrastructure; research on methods for combining models; summarize document research results and present findings at lab meetings; carry out independent literature reviews; write and present summaries of research to lab supervisor; perform assessment on findings to reach novel conclusions; carry out interviews with government officials; write basic code related to technical assessments and carry out original calculations, and validate calculations against other published work; and perform other related duties as required, including work performed at lower levels, when necessary.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree; a minimum of two years educational background in a physics or applied mathematics; superb command of English, both written and spoken, with a demonstrated ability to structure complex technical documents and write with clear and precise prose; provides input in selecting research directions; finding and reviewing papers, and synthesizing research findings; programming facility with a computational mathematics packages (e.g., Python or C) is required. PREFERRED: Experience applying technical methods to social questions in the domains of nuclear weapons or advanced conventional weapons; knowledge of the electric grid; knowledge of advanced simulation methods; exposure to nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory; knowledge of the LaTeX typesetting language. This is a full-time position expected to work in residence at MIT.

The position is for one year, renewable for up to one additional year pending satisfactory performance.

Salary: $51,000/year.
