The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) was established by the General Assembly in its resolution 77/301, adopted on 29 June 2023. Please note that while the position is currently located in Geneva, Switzerland, the duty station may be subject to change. Applicants should be aware that the position may be relocated to Damascus, Syria, or to another location relevant to the Institution’s operations. The Data Specialist - Data Science - reports to the Information Management Officer, or her/his designee. The Data Specialist - Data Science - develops and delivers the data science solutions by using internal and external data to better enable the planning and evidence-based decision making by looking at historical trends, current data and predictions. It designs the products that provide situational awareness, insight, and predictive assessment to guide programme management and implementation. It also identifies innovative data science solutions for complex organizational issues.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, applied mathematics, information management, data management, information systems, information science or a related quantitative field. A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
Demonstrate a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience only for the knowledge, skills, and abilities below labelled with is required. Demonstrate knowledge of core data science and analytics concepts, including statistics and predictive modelling is required. Demonstrate knowledge of AI/ML algorithms and data modelling techniques is required. Demonstrate knowledge of data life cycle including data collection, data wrangling, analysis, visualization, deployment, monitoring, and reporting is required. Demonstrate skills in designing, manipulating, and transforming datasets for specific applications is desirable. Demonstrate project management skills is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
