Job Description:

This position reports to the Associate Director of Programs for Recreation & Wellness. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with departmental staff to aid the Director in developing and managing a comprehensive Recreation program at the University at Albany.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of Intramural Programs
    • Manage the day-to-day operation of the Intramural Sports program.
    • Organize and oversee multi-day training clinics for officials and student supervisors.
    • Develop team, individual/dual, and special event sport schedules, which include weekday evening leagues and weekend events.
    • Develop policies, rules and regulations for the Intramural Sports program.
    • Schedule student staff to work during offerings of a variety of sports
    • Approve student payroll of intramural staff schedules
    • Oversee the equipment needs of each sport program and maintain budget necessary for equipment turn over.
  • Oversight of Open Recreation Services
    • Maintain equipment for Open Recreation
    • Oversee open recreation student staff, including student staffing budget, scheduling, and other student staffing needs
    • Work with Facility Collogues and Athletics for scheduling and coordination of space.
  • Oversight of Special Interest/Adaptive Programming, including but not limited to Unified Sports
    • Maintain relationship with partners at Special Olympics of New York in order to support Unified Sports Program at University at Albany
    • Collaborate with campus partners in order to recruit partners and student support including but not limited to RSSW, athletics, facilities, and more to maintain semesterly programming of unified sports program.
    • Plan and Execute two Showcase Day events per year (1 per semester) where Athletes and Partners are able to invite their families and showcase their talents and abilities from the semester's programming.
    • Recruit, manage, and organize all volunteers and student staff associated with Special Interest programming. Including but not limited to, Unified Partners, Event Volunteers, and required staff.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships:

  • Graduate Assistant assigned to Intramural Sports
  • Student Intramural Supervisors, Officials, Score Keepers,
  • Student Staff assigned to Open Recreation
  • Volunteers associated with Special Interest/ adaptive programming

Ancillary Responsibilities:

  • Assists in establishing and implementing goals and objectives.
  • Assists the in creating the department's strategic plan.
  • Interacts with Director and staff members regarding topics to help identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with all Campus Recreation Programming professional staff members to actively communicate and market all programs through print media, electronic media, social media, special events and any other efforts deemed appropriate to effectively reach the University Community.
  • Maintains a positive relationship with other personnel and departments that assist in the development of Campus Recreation programs, services, and facilities.
  • Represents the Department of Campus Recreation and The University at Albany on various committees, boards, and associations.
  • Interacts with students, faculty, and staff for the benefit of carrying out the mission of the department.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution in Sports Administration, Recreation, Athletic/Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Business Administration and/or related field.
  • Two or more years of relevant experience in recreation base programs and services
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion and belonging relative to their role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education Administration, Recreation, Sports Administration, Business Administration, and/or related field.
  • Experience in coordinating events with partners in order to support the programming needs of an area
  • Ability to train student staff in technical skills of officiating intramural sports such as basketball, flag football, volleyball, etc..
  • Exceptional ability to be organized in maintaining equipment used during programs and services.

Working Environment: A majority of this job includes a typical office environment, however, candidate must be willing to sometimes be in the field/outdoors/in recreation spaces including outdoor turf field, indoor three court gym, etc.. Candidate must be able to lift 30lbs and drive department vehicles.

Professional Rank and Salary Grade: SL-3, Student Activities Assistant Director, $57,151-$59,000
