Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Stationary Engineer for the Elizabeth Packard Mental Health Center located in Springfield, Illinois to receive day to day guidance and assignments from the Chief Stationary Engineer. Installs, maintains and repair various and moving equipment machinery weighing up to 50 pounds (100 pounds with assistance). Makes rounds of buildings’ boiler and mechanical rooms at regular intervals to assess the operation and efficiency of all machinery and equipment and to detect potential mechanical problems. Test and records water used for consumption or used for other systems and adds appropriate chemicals as needed for proper maintenance of systems. Confers with Center Administration staff, Facilities Manager or Region Manager to resolve problems related to building services. Travels in the performance of job duties.

Essential Functions

• Receives day to day guidance and assignments from Chief Stationary Engineer.
• Makes rounds of buildings' boiler and mechanical rooms at regular intervals to assess the operation and efficiency of machinery and equipment and to detect potential mechanical problems.
• Makes and records tests of water used for consumption or for generating steam and hydronic hot water, chilled water systems and adds appropriate chemicals for proper maintenance of systems including chilled and hot water loops and cooling towers.
• Confers with tenant agencies to resolve problems related to building services.
• Observes and listens to the performance of various machineries to detect mechanical problems.
• Completes all mandatory training for compliance with all regulations for Mental Health Centers.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of eight (8) years of elementary school.
• Requires four (4) years’ experience in power plant operation and in firing high-pressure and/or low-pressure stationary boilers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Four (4) years of specialized experience in the operation of high-pressure/low-pressure, coal, gas or oil-fired boilers and their appurtenances.
• Three (3) years of specialized experience in water treatment and various chemicals used in boiler systems.
• Three (3) years of specialized experience diagnosing problems in mechanical, electrical, heating and air conditioning/HVAC systems.
• Three (3) years of professional experience directing the work of employees and outside contractors engaged in the operation and maintenance of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
• Three (3) years of experience taking utility readings, logging records, ensuring maintenance schedules are followed, reviewing and actioning maintenance reports for technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
• Three (3) years of experience diagnosing building and mechanical issues, recognizing potentially dangerous situations, and implementing appropriate emergency responses.
• Three (3) years of specialized experience in public health Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and building codes of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
• Three (3) of experience following and expressing complex ideas clearly both orally and in written form in the field of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.

Conditions of Employment

• Requires possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A Section 608 Rules* or the ability to obtain such certificate within 6 months of employment. *The possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 encompasses positions which perform refrigeration/air-conditioning work that has the possibility of release of chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere.
• Requires the ability to perform various tasks such as lifting and moving equipment/machinery up to 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance).
• Requires the ability to utilize agency supplied materials/equipment (i.e., cellphone, desktop computer, laptop, phone, radio etc.).
• Requires an appropriate, valid driver’s license and the ability to travel.
• Requires the ability to work shifts, including weekends and holidays for emergency situations.
• Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
• Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
• Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

5-week rotation, with rotating days off.

Week 1: 6am-2pm Mon-Tues, 7am-3:30pm Wed-Fri, Off Sat-Sun

Week 2: Off Mon-Tues, 7am-3:30pm Wed, 2pm-10pm Thurs-Fri, 10pm-6am Sat-Sun

Week 3: Off Mon-Tues, 6am-2pm Wed- Sun

Week 4: 10pm-6am Mon-Wed, Off Thurs-Fri, 2pm-10pm Sat-Sun

Week 5: 2pm-10pm Mon-Wed, 10pm-6am Thurs-Fri, Off Sat-Sun

Lunch Period Length: The lunch period on 8-hour shifts is 30 mins paid; the lunch period length on 8.5 hours shifts is 30 min unpaid
