About the Role

Wirecutter is seeking a Senior Editor to oversee our sleep team, which covers mattresses and sleep-related products ranging from pillows to sunrise alarm clocks to sleep trackers. As Wirecutter's Senior Sleep Editor, you'll expand our sleep coverage and set our vision within the category. You'll manage a team of writers and editors to craft journalism that helps readers find the information they need.

You should ideally have experience in both product and health journalism, as much of our sleep coverage is in areas where those two topics intersect. Experience specifically in the world of mattresses or sleep products is valuable, but a candidate with a passion for personal health and a strong reporting and editing background could also be successful. You know how to apply a skeptic's eye to marketing claims, and while you have a wide array of industry contacts and sources, you also understand the importance of journalistic standards and integrity. As a Wirecutter journalist, you'll also recognize the importance of considering those with different needs and diverse perspectives when writing or editing a guide or other piece of journalism.

You will report to the Editorial Director of Home. This is a hybrid role based out of our Long Island City office in New York City.

  • Manage editorial process and serve as top or lead editor for guides, short-form journalism, and other projects that fall under your area of coverage
  • Approve ideas from your team and use data to support pitches and to monitor performance
  • Contribute original and ambitious ideas to test planning, suggest creative reporting strategies, challenge writers' assumptions
  • Collaborate with our creative team and audience teams to develop compelling new visuals and formats
  • Interact with our reader community through multiple channels, including social, comments, and through our community team
  • Attend trade shows and product news events
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • Minimum 5 years of professional editing experience
  • At least two years managing editors and/or writers
