Purpose

The Executive Director of Development Communications will lead the strategic planning and execution of all development communications initiatives for the University of Texas Medical Center. This role is pivotal in enhancing the center’s visibility, engagement, and support through innovative communication strategies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Strategic Advisor for Communications Strategies

  • Serves as a strategic advisor and core member of the fundraising leadership team, ensuring communications strategies are fully integrated with fundraising goals, priorities, and business needs across UTMC.

Design and implement comprehensive communication strategies

  • Designs and implements comprehensive communication strategies across the full cycle of giving that ensure alignment with institutional priorities and fundraising goals, including major fundraising campaigns, planned giving initiatives, and donor stewardship programs.

Lead Digital Strategy

  • Leads the production and distribution of digital and video content that effectively communicates the center’s mission, achievements, and needs.

AI Guidelines and Training

  • Establishes guidelines, uses cases and training processes for generative AI tools for all relevant Teams, such as communication and marketing teams.

Lead, mentor, facilitate team of communications professionals

  • Leads, mentors and facilitates a high-performing team of communication professionals responsible for content strategy, donor messaging, and campaign communications. Set vision, priorities, and standards for excellence in donor communications, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations. Monitor and analyze communication metrics to assess the effectiveness of strategies and make data-driven adjustments.

Marginal or Periodic Functions:

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Proficiency in using artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies for communication purposes
  • Proven expertise in digital and video content creation and distribution
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and manage multiple projects simultaneously

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations or related field, 7-10 years of experience of development communications within higher education and/or academic medical centers, 3 years of experience leading and managing high-performing teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations or related field. 12 years of professional experience in communications, fundraising, or marketing. 5 years of experience leading and managing high-performing teams. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Salary Range

$175,618+ depending on qualifications

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
