General Statement of Duties

Skilled work involving the operation and maintenance of a complex sewage treatment plant, requiring understanding of the theory and practice of sewage treatment. Responsible for control and adjustment of specific routines in the plant operation, reporting to the Process Control Manager (PCM). When the PCM is not available, may be responsible for plant control.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or trade school plus field education to meet the licensed requirements and 5 years of related experience.

Special Necessary Qualifications:

Must possess CT Class III Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification at time of appointment to the position, and maintain during employment. CT Class II Wastewater Treatment Operator license holders may be considered if able to demonstrate ability to qualify for the Class III license and obtain a Class III within one year of employment.

May possess out of state equivalent to a Class III at time of application, but must contact CTDEEP’s Bureau of Water Protection and Land Reuse to obtain proof of license reciprocity upon conditional offer of employment (prior to appointment to position).

Must obtain Class II Wastewater Collection Certification within 18 months of hire.

Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL) with tanker endorsement preferred.

Qualifications:

Considerable knowledge of the theory and practical application of sewage treatment and the units and equipment used in treatment.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work related to wastewater treatment facilities.

Skilled in the operation of a personal computer and related software applications.

Ability to use independent judgment and to supervise the work of unskilled subordinates.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to keep records and make reports.

Valid Driver’s License.

Examination: 100% Training & Experience Assessment

The examination to determine a candidate's eligibility for the position will be a Training and Experience Assessment. This type of examination requires that you completely fill out the application, adding pages for additional relevant information where needed, and attaching any documentation of certificates, degrees, other significant documents, etc. A candidate's eligibility to be interviewed will be based solely on material submitted at the time of application. Once the Eligibility List is prepared no further information may be submitted and no adjustments will be made.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists the Process Control Manager in proper operation of the plant, supervises assistants of lower grade and assists in maintenance of records.

Makes routine adjustments of controls and makes routine tests on process.

Assumes full charge of plant in absence of Process Control Manager and routinely on other shifts where PCM is not onsite.

Assists mechanic and electrician in testing, maintenance and repair of equipment, units, and building.

Obtains all required samples for laboratory personnel.

Contacts appropriate Town and Government officials as required by Sewer Division policies and procedures.

May answer phones, operate communication equipment and deal with public as needed.

Performs related work as assigned.

Supplemental Information

All positions may be subject to an interview process. The Town reserves the right to limit the number of qualified candidates who will be invited to participate in the examination, or any part thereof.

All outside candidates will be required to undertake and successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination, which includes a substance abuse test that includes testing for THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana), given at the Town's expense prior to employment if conditionally offered a part time, full time or safety sensitive position.

The Town of Greenwich has implemented a policy of background investigations all full and part time positions prior to hiring as part of the reference checking procedures for outside candidates. The investigation will only be conducted as the last step prior to an offer. Refusal to sign the release form will terminate the candidate's further consideration.
