Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on the Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Cape Canaveral SFS is a 1,325-acre United States military installation located on Cape Canaveral, FL and is headquartered at Patrick Space Force Base. The primary mission of this installation is to oversee the preparation and launching of US Government, civil, and commercial satellites from Cape Canaveral SFS. The installation also provides launch facilities and services to support the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, commercial space operations, and the US Navy’s Naval Ordnance Test Unit for missile tests and submarine operations. The Cape Canaveral SFS environmental program is responsible for providing continued mission access to natural resources be ensuring mission compliance with all related federal and local environmental laws. Other priorities for the program include threatened and endangered species management, invasive species management, and wildlife management.

Our program offers practical experience in fish and wildlife ecology, vegetation and habitat monitoring and management, restoration, environmental compliance, natural and cultural resources planning, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Ideal for students, recent graduates, and early-career professionals. Guided by experienced Resource Managers and Specialists, you’ll engage in hands-on environmental management projects, developing practical skills and enhancing your professional growth.

Paid, temporary positions (Temporary Technical Support I) are available with CSUCEMML at military installations across the United States and at CSUs main campus. These positions include internships, mentorships, and early career opportunities through CEMML’s ECDP. No military affiliation is required to apply.

The Natural Resources Technician will assist with various aspects of the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (SFS) Environmental Program with a focus on population assessments and population monitoring. This position is in-person, full-time, Monday-Friday for the full duration.

General tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • Wildlife surveys and/or management
  • Threatened and endangered species monitoring and/or management
  • Field-data collection, entry, and/or management
  • Writing and editing technical reports
  • Data analysis and/or mapping using ArcGIS
  • Update and/or maintain plan (Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan, site inspections and/or monitoring, Survey123, ArcGIS Field Maps, Avenza Maps, or other data form development

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Sea turtle nest density and productivity monitoring
  • Florida scrub-jay population assessments including assisting with banding individuals
  • Southeastern beach mouse population assessments using game cameras and/or track tubes
  • Bat monitoring through acoustic detectors and maintaining the detectors
  • Shorebird monitoring including nesting and wintering seasons
  • Gopher tortoise conservation
  • Assist with reviewing and updating the installation’s Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan

Please note: The tasks and duties listed are potential and may change due to season, general weather, or changes to the management plan. Other things that may impact the tasks include personnel changes and site availability. Successful candidates will be flexible in assisting with tasks as assigned by the NRM; and they must understand that no two days may be alike and at times the daily tasks can change unpredictably.

The positions, duration, and the associated projects vary by location. Each position provides unique projects and tasks to help students and recent graduates understand the roles of environmental staff and the methods they use support their programs and environments. ECDP technicians will have the opportunity to expand their skills in various disciplines, including but not limited to:

  • Flora and fauna inventory
  • Invasive species monitoring and management
  • Threatened and endangered species monitoring
  • Habitat restoration
  • Erosion mitigation
  • Forest inventory timber cruise
  • Prescribed fire and wildland firefighting
  • Outdoor recreation
  • Community outreach, volunteer coordination, and public education
  • Field-data collection, entry, and management using GPS, ArcGIS, and Excel

Required Job Qualifications

  • Must have an interest in pursuing a career in federal lands management.
  • Pursuing a B.S. in natural resources-, cultural resources-, ecosystem science-, or environmental policy-related field (at least a sophomore standing).
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for operating federal vehicles.
  • Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S by position start date.; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

  • Currently enrolled or holder of a Graduate Degree in natural resources, biology, or environmental science-related fields.
  • Experience collecting field data and entering data in paper or digital forms.
  • Experience using GPS equipment to collect field data.
  • Experience flora and/or fauna monitoring or management (specify taxa/ecosystem/regions of prior experience).
  • Experience performing habitat restoration or invasive species management.
  • Experience with manual labor using powered tools and heavy equipment such as chainsaws, weed-eaters, mowers, tractors, ATVs/UTVs etc.
  • Training and experience using GIS software.
