Court Interpreter Coordinator (Departmental Promotional Only)

Description

The Superior Court of California, San Mateo County, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Court Interpreter Coordinator.

The Interpreter Coordinator will be responsible for locating and coordinating qualified court interpreters and for assigning full-time and part-time interpreters, as well as independent contractors.

Examples of Duties:

  • Schedule employee interpreters as appropriate and locate services from outside contractors or agencies as needed.
  • Make and respond to phone calls regarding interpreter service needs.
  • Communicate with the regional interpreter coordinator to ensure compliance with the cross-assignment rules.
  • Perform various administrative tasks, verify and approve claims for expense reimbursement, monitor daily activity logs, make appropriate entries into CIDCS, and prepare interpreter statistics on daily language usage in the court.
  • Organize work, set priorities, and ensure critical deadlines are met.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

Three years of varied technical court experience, including customer service and knowledge of calendaring and courtroom operations.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of court interpretation.
  • Courtroom practices and procedures.
  • Computer and record systems used in the Court.
  • Spreadsheet and database application software.
  • Office practices and procedures.
  • Records management practices and procedures.
  • Correct English usage, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Business arithmetic.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Plan and organize the assignment of interpreters.
  • Implement changes to work procedures.
  • Learn and understand rules related to court interpretation and the scheduling of interpreters.
  • Maintain an effective relationship with all those contacted during the course of work.
  • Prepare statistical reports.
  • Resolve varied office administrative issues.
  • Prioritize and organize work in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Exercise initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Use standard office equipment, including a word processor and/or a personal or online computer.
  • Organize and maintain accurate files and records.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain flexibility in a challenging and changing work environment.

Physical Demands:

  • Work at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.
  • Stoop and reach above shoulder level.
  • Bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
  • Verbal communication.
  • Use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and fax.

Departmental Promotional Only. Only current employees in the County of San Mateo Superior Court of California with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, or extra-help/limited term position prior to the final filing date may apply.

Based solely on the information provided in the application materials, an application screening committee will select those applicants whose education, training, and experience most closely matches the needs of the department. Those selected will be invited to a panel board examination (weight: 100%), which may include the evaluation of a written and or performance exercise given immediately preceding the interview. Selected applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place of the tests.

Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations.
