Lab Tech or Specialist (Varying Levels)

The Department of Hematology-Oncology at the University of Virginia seeks either a Laboratory and Research Technician 2 or Laboratory Specialist (depending on qualifications) to assist investigators in the Fox Lab with experiments designed to investigate sphingolipids in models of cancer, inflammation, and ocular diseases. Two individuals are sought.

Position 1: The individual will predominantly be performing cellular and rodent-based assays (e.g., angiogenesis, leukocyte adhesion, diabetic complications, and cancer model of leukemia and prostate cancer), maintaining mouse colonies, and performing molecular and biochemical assays. Experimental techniques may include flow cytometry, western blotting, cellular phenotyping assays, and preparation of samples for mass spectrometry. Skill sets in biochemistry, cellular biology, and physiology are desired. While some relevant experience is desired, training will be provided.

Position 2: In the second position, the individual will assist in the operation of a mass spectrometers. The successful candidate will be preparing and analyzing small molecules (drugs, lipidomics, metabolomics, etc) by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for multiple projects and maintaining equipment. Specific tasks may include solid-phase and liquid-liquid extractions, development of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry methods, and analysis of “-omics” datasets. Skill sets in , analytical chemistry, chemistry, biochemistry, bioinformatics are desired. While some relevant experience is desired, training will be provided.

The successful candidate will:

Experimental Work

  • Assist with the design and development of experimental assays. Maintain in vitro and in vivo models. Prepare samples for mass spectrometry analyses. Perform a variety of experimental procedures and assist in the evaluation of research methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives. Assist with data analysis.

Laboratory Maintenance and General Duties

  • Maintain a clean laboratory area and assist with overall laboratory maintenance. Make buffers and other reagents. Maintain a laboratory notebook. Be available to assist principal investigators as needed.

Ordering and Purchasing

  • Process purchases for the lab using the UVA Marketplace Interact with vendors to determine appropriate products Return damaged or incorrect items

Additional duties for Lab Specialist:

  • Perform daily activities without supervision and must be able to train others on work processes and policies.
  • Provide ACUC and EHS compliance management and coordination of laboratory meetings and laboratory maintenance.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with GraphPad Prism, R, and/or other statistical software
  • Experience with flow cytometry, western blotting, immunofluorescence, cell culture assays, rodent-based assays, and/or maintenance of mouse colonies.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and statistical/bioinformatics analyses (experience while in school will be considered).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Laboratory and Research Technician 2

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Lab Specialist:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 2 years of experience. 4 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Lab Specialist Intermediate:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 4 years of experience. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 8 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Lab Specialist Senior

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 6 years of experience. 10 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree or Master's degree plus 4 years lab-related experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

The selected applicant will be required to complete a background check and health screen prior to their first day of employment per University policy.

This is a restricted position and continuation is dependent on the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.
