Overview Provides assistance at the service desk. Using independent judgment, responds to or refers requests. Answers directional questions, questions about policy and procedure, and basic information questions about Yale Library and Yale University. Assists patrons in searching the online catalog and databases for known and unknown library resources. Searches for bibliographic data with incomplete information or source material in catalogs, reference sources, files, and databases. Charges and discharges library materials. Logs service point transactions. Assists with support for patrons in use of productivity software, specialized research support software, courseware and other applications. Refers issues with public workstations, printers and other equipment to the appropriate departments. Helps maintain Marx stacks by sorting, shelving, shifting and shelf reading Marx materials. Understands arrangement and organization of multiple classification schemes. Retrieves requests from the Marx stacks, empties and discharges materials from bookdrops and Eli Express bins. Assists with searches for missing items. Maintains book displays. Updates aisle cards. Conducts sweeps of library to locate books. May direct and monitor the work of student employees, assisting with questions at the Marx service point and for other operations responsibilities. Ability to push loaded book trucks, lift heavy cartons and books, use step tools and climb a library ladder, as well as reach, bend, stand and walk for the majority of the work schedule. Ability to tolerate dust due to shifting and shelving books. Collects and records statistics and other data on library shelving in an orderly and timely manner; may tabulate data. May scan documents for Interlibrary Loan, Scan and Deliver or Reserves. Based on operational need, may assist with desk coverage at other library locations on campus -Responsible for: opening and closing the library; reporting security issues; resolving patron disputes when possible or referring patrons to the appropriate supervisor; identifying, reporting and documenting facilities problems and emergency situations according to procedures. Performs additional related duties and assists with special projects as assigned across Marx department and other Yale libraries. May be required to work holidays and recess days; schedule subject to change during recess times and summer session. May be required to assist in disaster recovery operations. May be assigned to work at the West Campus of Yale University located in West Haven, CT. Required Skills and Abilities 1. Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate tactfully and effectively with a culturally diverse range of people with varied research and instructional needs. Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service, preferably in a library setting or in a fast-paced service environment. 2. Demonstrated ability to direct and monitor the work of student employees. 3. Demonstrated ability to effectively complete tasks in a busy public services setting, with accuracy and attention to detail despite frequent interruptions. Ability to handle complex assignments, to solve problems effectively and work independently and collaboratively without close supervision. 4. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to compose original correspondence, reports and procedures. Demonstrated ability to articulate policies, procedures and regulations. 5. Demonstrated proficiency in Windows based computer applications. Demonstrated expertise in using Library catalogs and Integrated Library Systems. Proven experience working in an automated office environment. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, email and internet browsers. Preferred Education, Experience and Skills High level of familiarity with Voyager Circulation, Alma, and Call slip modules, Interlibrary Loan and Reserves processing and software.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Serves as a primary source of information on established procedures and policies for staff and patrons. 2. May perform a range of public and technical services functions. 3. Oversees, instructs, revises, the work or coordinates work activities of staff. 4. Provides research assistance to patrons and staff in writing and at reference desk. 5. Interviews patron to determine scope and depth of request. Identifies and resolves problems. 6. Searches for bibliographic data with incomplete information or source material in catalogs, reference sources, files, and databases. 7. Acquires library material that has been recommended by patrons or librarians. 8. Oversees a unit budget. Monitors expenditures, reconciles statements and maintains records. Organizes special projects. 9. Performs functions incidental to library activities. Required Education and Experience Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
