High Point University's Workman School of Dental Medicine is seeking a dedicated and experienced Part-Time Attending Dental Hygienist to support the dual mission of dental education and clinical excellence. This hybrid role will provide oversight and instruction to dental students in preclinical simulation lab sessions and while dental students are delivering direct patient care in HPU Health-affiliated dental practices.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Associate’s degree, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in Dental Hygiene
- Current North Carolina Dental Hygienist license (or immediate eligibility)
- CPR certification required; BLS certification is a plus
Experience and Training
- Preferred educational experience as a dental hygiene or dental assisting instructor
- Preferred clinical experience in a high-functioning dental office, with preference given to experience operating in an assisted hygiene model
- Training on an electronic medical record
- EPIC training is a major plus, but not necessary
- Local anesthesia training is a plus

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Academic (Simulation Lab):
- Supervise and support dental and dental hygiene students in simulation lab activities.
- Demonstrate clinical hygiene procedures and proper ergonomics in a simulated environment.
- Provide feedback on instrumentation, infection control, and workflow techniques.
- Assist faculty with lab setup, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
- Reinforce didactic concepts through hands-on guidance in a lab setting.
Clinical (HPU Health Practices):
- Oversee and instruct students delivering preventive and therapeutic dental hygiene services including prophylaxis, scaling and root planing, oral health education, and radiographic imaging.
- Collaborate with dentists, students, and other team members to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Mentor students rotating through clinical settings to reinforce appropriate clinical behavior, communication, and professionalism.
- Ensure the maintenance of accurate patient records and comply with all HIPAA, OSHA, and infection control protocols.
- Oversee clinical documentation to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant note completion in alignment with organizational standards and regulatory requirements.
Administrative
- Ensure consistency of materials, instruments, and supplies in simulation lab and HPU Health practices.
- Participation in calibration activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Assistant Professor of Periodontics
- Evaluation: Ongoing performance reviews is conducted along with an annual assessments by the Assistant Professor of Periodontics and Chief Dental Officer and includes input from the faculty and students.
