The Bridge Bureau within the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is responsible for providing bridge and structural designs for various transportation projects across the state. The bureau offers technical support during construction, ensuring that bridge and structural projects meet design standards and safety requirements.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date.

This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?

This position exists to ensure the effective management and execution of bridge-related design projects. The Engineer Manager I is responsible for determining the scope of work for various bridge projects, assessing the appropriate costs for bridge work items, and ensuring that bridge details and plans are complete and ready for review and distribution. Additionally, this position is tasked with verifying that shop drawings comply with the bridge plans, specifications and approved products, and deciding on the format for various drawing details to ensure clarity and consistency across all bridge-related projects.

How does it get done?

Key responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Design and Prepare Bridge and Structural Plans: Develop detailed and accurate plans for various bridge and structural projects across the state.
  • Scope and Plan Bridge Projects: Determine the project scope, including specifications and requirements, and plan out bridge and structural projects to meet these needs.
  • Provide Support to District Offices: Offer technical support and guidance to district offices regarding their bridge and structural project requirements.
  • Prepare Accurate Drawings: Create Computer Aided Drafting (AutoCAD) drawings that reflect existing site conditions and the impact of the proposed bridge or structural design.
  • Review Shop Drawings: Evaluate fabricator shop drawings for bridge and structural components to ensure they meet contract specifications and are accurate for construction.
  • Miscellaneous Bridge/Structural Tasks: Perform additional tasks related to bridge and structural design as directed by the Design Section Manager or State Bridge Engineer.

This position serves the NMDOT Districts and the public.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred education, licensure, and/or experience in the following areas:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Civil Engineering as certified by the New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors (NMBLPEPS).
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution, with a focus on relevant structural engineering disciplines.
  • Six (6) years of engineering experience in bridge design, construction, or related fields, with two (2) years of experience as a licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
  • AutoCAD, MathCAD, and other bridge design software.
  • Bridge/structural design calculations and plan preparation.
  • Strong understanding of design specifications and the ability to write technical reports.
  • Adaptability, with a willingness to learn and develop their skills further.
  • Capable of working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and five (5) years of engineering experience, one (1) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.

Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is substantially performed in an office setting with occasional field visits. Extensive use of computer monitors, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT), extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Exposure to: inclement weather, traffic, construction equipment, heights, confined spaces, hazardous chemicals. This position will require periodic site visits to bridge structures and assistance in the inspection of bridges. Travel throughout the state and occasional out of state travel may be required. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
