The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Bridge Bureau manages numerous bridge and structural transportation projects throughout all six (6) NMDOT Districts. These bridge projects are crucial for the NMDOT to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations regarding funding allocated for project completion.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
This position will assist the Bridge Design Unit Supervisor with designing, preparing and providing bridge and structural plans for various transportation projects statewide. The Engineer Professional I will allow the NMDOT to fulfill its mission and obligation of completing projects on time and within budget. This position shall participate in all phases of structural design from conceptual design to final plan preparation as well as construction services. Additionally, this position is intended for a technical expert that will perform Quality Control/Quality Assurance reviews for internally designed bridges and structures and will perform Quality Assurance on projects that are designed by consultants to ensure compliance with the NMDOT Bridge Procedures and Design Guide as well as adherence to the NMDOT Project Development Process.
Key responsibilities of this position will include determining: the scope of work for various projects; appropriate costs for bridge work items; when bridge details and plans are complete and ready for review and distribution; deciding if shop drawings are in conformance with specifications; and determining format for various and multiple drawing details.
Essential Duties will also include:
1. Assist with designing, preparing, and providing bridge and structural plans for various bridge and structural projects on a
statewide basis.
2. Assist with scoping and planning out bridge and structural projects.
3. Provide support to District offices on their bridge and structural needs.
4. Prepare drawings that accurately reflect the existing site conditions and the impact of the proposed design utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD/AutoCAD) tools.
5. Review fabricator shop drawings for components of bridges and other structures under construction to verify accuracy and
compliance with the contract documents.
6. Perform miscellaneous bridge/structural related tasks as directed by the Design Unit Supervisor and the State Bridge Engineer.

The ideal candidate will have preferred experience and/or education in the following areas:
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and four (4) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
