Job Title: GIS Technician

Job Description

The GIS Technician is responsible for analyzing geographic information about the earth's surface and its objects, providing technical and analytical support in areas such as environmental management, exploration and mining, land ownership, urban planning, utilities management, and demographic marketing. This role involves using GIS software and programs to create and maintain databases and maps, meeting with users to define data needs and project requirements, and compiling geographic data from various sources.

Responsibilities

  • Work with GIS software to create and maintain databases and maps.
  • Meet with users to define data needs, project requirements, and develop applications.
  • Compile geographic data from sources such as censuses, field observations, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps.
  • Analyze spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports.
  • Enter new map data using a digitizer or direct input of coordinate information based on cartographic principles.
  • Participate in the Pole Transfer/Joint Use Make Ready Team for in-field GIS data collection.
  • Make educated in-field design suggestions based on field data.
  • Use digital measuring technologies to measure Joint Use attachment heights and utility-owned distribution lines.
  • Collect field data using proprietary software to update utilities GIS and make design determinations.
  • Travel throughout Virginia and occasionally for storm response work, which may include weekend travel and long days.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency with Esri's ArcGIS suite or other GIS software.
  • Experience with in-field data collection.
  • Ability to work 90% in-field and manage varying field conditions.
  • General computer skills.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to maintain a rental car.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with ArcGIS, ArcMap, or Engineering Technology.
  • Required outdoor field experience, which can include internships or academic projects.

Work Environment

This role involves 100% field responsibilities, ideal for candidates who enjoy working outdoors and can handle elements such as rain, heat, and cold. There may be occasional overnight travel throughout Virginia. When not working outdoors, candidates should be comfortable working remotely from home.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.
