Data Analysts support leadership to meet the agency's goals through conducting data needs assessments to attain actionable mission-driven results. Through extensive research, they manage and assessments to maintain agency-related data sets of varying sizes using a variety of standard analysis tools such as Excel, Access, SQL, Power BI, R and ArcGIS, and/or other programming tools such as SAS or Python as needed ensuring consistency and integrity of data. Interpreting data, including statistical values, may provide advice and consultation regarding implications and/or make recommendations for adjustments.

Why does the job exist?

Data Analysts in this position collect, clean, maintain and analyze data from limited or defined data sets and prepare data-driven reports specific to program/divisional needs. Analysts will work within both the Department of Safety (DPS) and other state agencies, as well as with local and federal law enforcement agencies to provide data-driven results that will support leadership decisions and provide answers for data-related questions from all levels of government.

How does it get done?

Analysts will complete work via the gathering of data from public and non-public data sources, providing comprehensive data sets and analysis for assigned projects. Data sources may include (but will not be limited to) online websites, data repositories such as SQL databases, and internal RMS systems. Data gathered will be presented in both internal RMS systems, written reports, power point digital/physical presentations, and excel data sheets. Analysts will be expected to maintain a professional and respectful working relationship with law enforcement and state employees, and answer questions and make corrections and changes as requested by said stakeholders. This also includes adherence to desired project completion deadlines, as well as the completion of both routine scheduled reporting projects alongside individual project requests. The attendance of training courses/meetings, as well as the training of other employees may also be required, and confidentiality of data is expected at all levels of analysis.

Who are the customers?

Analysis projects will be made for DPS/NM State Police, as well as other State, City, and Federal agencies.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business or Public Administration, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or other related field with six (6) years of experience directly related to position at time of posting. The ideal candidate for this position will additionally be knowledgeable in word processing programs, data spreadsheet programs, and database SQL commands, and have familiarity with law enforcement-based RMS (record management systems) programs as well as a working familiarity with law enforcement officers in general.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business or Public Administration, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or other related field with four (4) years of experience directly related to position at time of posting or related professional certification as determined by the hiring agency. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License, a current Defensive Driving Course Certification from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Continued employment is subject to a national fingerprint-based records check within 30 days of assignment and contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy

Working Conditions

Data Analysts will work in a sitting computer office environment, with exposure to confidential police information. Analysts will be expected to complete reports accurately and quickly within a potentially high stress environment, and work with commissioned law enforcement officers on a daily basis. Potentially, the analysts might come into contact with police equipment, and officers using/demonstrating said equipment in nearby facilities. In the line of work, some lifting may additionally be required. Analysts must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
