Departmental Overview

Data Science Undergraduate Studies (DSUS) offers a range of academic, co curricular and enrichment programs—including the Data Science major and minor—with a wide-reaching impact both across UC Berkeley and beyond. Designed in collaboration with faculty from across Berkeley, Data Science invests students with deep technical knowledge, expertise in how to apply that knowledge in a field of their choosing, and an understanding of the social and human contexts and ethical implications of how data are collected, analyzed, and used. This combination positions graduates to help inform and develop solutions to a range of pressing challenges, from adapting industry to a new world of data, to amplifying learning in education, to helping communities recover from disaster.

DSUS is part of the College of Computing, Data Science and Society (CDSS), which strives to develop, implement and share high-quality, ethics-oriented and accessible curricula, educating a diverse student body in data science, computing and statistics. Core to the college is an understanding of how computing and data science affect equality, equity, and opportunity—and the capacity to respond to social challenges.

This position is the Project Manager for Community College Partnerships for projects funded by California Learning Lab, supporting the development, deployment, and scaling of data science curriculum across multiple instructional formats, including outside UC Berkeley. The role involves coordinating instructional design, technology platform support, and curricular innovation . The ideal candidate will bring practical experience in data science teaching, a strategic understanding of the evolving educational landscape, and the ability to collaborate with faculty, technologists, and student teams to advance inclusive, scalable, and impactful data science education. The position will help to run the National Workshop on Data Science Education, the California Alliance for Data Science Education, and the outreach efforts around DSUS curriculum.

Responsibilities

25% Support cohort-based learning pathways by coordinating onboarding, communication, and professional development for instructors, student leaders, and participating institutions. Foster a collaborative community of practice among educators implementing data science curriculum.

20% Coordinate outreach and community engagement efforts to support the adoption and adaptation of open-source data science curriculum across diverse institutions and learning environments. Build partnerships with faculty, educational organizations, and community colleges to expand access and impact.

15% Maintain and manage curriculum infrastructure, including open educational resources, learning platforms (e.g., LMS), interactive computing tools (e.g., Jupyter), and assessment systems. Ensure materials and tools are accessible, well-documented, and aligned with pedagogical goals.

15% Project management for grants. Arranges stakeholder meetings. Develops scope of work, budgets, and reports for project requirements.

10% Collaborate with academic leadership to support strategic planning, course deployment, and program expansion aligned with the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society’s educational mission.

10% Evaluate and document teaching practices and curriculum outcomes, contributing to continuous improvement, research, and dissemination of effective data science teaching methods.

5% Establishes and maintains contacts internally in DSUS and with external constituents for the collection and exchange of data and ideas as they pertain to the scope of the position.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of core data science and social science concepts.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Analytical / problem-solving skills, including integration of technical and societally relevant materials.
  • Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $72,600 - $94,800.
