About the Role

The Operations Supervisor position is responsible for dispatching up to 20 local street tractors and the administrative activities of associates performing dispatch functions, while offering quality service to our customers. Duties may also include overseeing hostle, warehouse, yard and auto operations when needed. This position is also responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the staffing for all areas of the operation in coordination with other supervisors. Conduct daily pre-shift meetings to assign labor to work areas. Maintaining the "safety first" culture of the Tacoma operation.

What you’ll do:

  • Supervise the activities related to truck dispatch while ensuring customer satisfaction and established profit/production goals are met.
  • Responsible for supervising up to 30 bargaining unit employees - Teamster and OPEIU combined.
  • Communicate with drivers and customers on pick-ups and deliveries.
  • Maintain accurate payroll, dispatch logs, and spreadsheet.
  • Other duties may include supervising the hostle, warehouse, yard, and auto operations.
  • Work with management team to plan, organize, and manage staffing for all areas of the operation.
  • Conduct daily pre-shift meetings to assign labor to work areas.
  • Evaluate dispatch costs, methods, and opportunities to improve network efficiency.
  • Supervise labor within the department by utilizing the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in order to maintain a productive and efficient labor climate.
  • Ensure safety standards are maintained to protect associates, cargo, and property, i.e., equipment operations and hazardous materials.
  • Maintain fixed and variable expenses for dispatch operations at or below budgeted levels while maintaining operating efficiencies.
  • Ensure proper and productive communication with other departments and terminals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Dispatch supervisor is responsible for 17 street drivers.
  • Hostle / Warehouse supervisor is responsible for 12 hostle drivers and 5 warehouse personnel.
  • Yard supervisor is responsible for 13 yard and auto personnel.
  • Promoting safe work activities by conducting safety audits and attending company safety meetings.

You have these skills:

And these qualifications:

  • 5 years’ experience in a transportation related field. Experience working with and supervising union employees required.
  • Prior dispatch experience with knowledge of the local area.
  • Extensive PC software, report writing and data entry knowledge. Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to gather and analyze information and make appropriate decisions in a number of conditions under tight time frames to meet cost and service requirements.
  • Ability to exhibit flexibility; adapt to change and stress in ambiguous situations. Able to adapt to changing hours and other variables.
  • Strong supervisory, team-building skills. Ability to establish goals, set priorities and schedule daily responsibilities in a constantly changing environment.
  • Interacts effectively and develops rapport with associates, managers, departments, and locations. Must work effectively with customers, vendors, and labor groups.
  • Evaluate situations and take initiative on issues as needed; adapt to and work effectively within a variety of situations, and with individuals and groups, promoting teamwork and cooperation.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and various hours as needed.
  • Valid Washington state driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for at least two hours at a time.
  • Ability to lift 10 lbs. on occasion.
  • Ability stand, bend, walk, climb, kneel, reach, push, pull, talk, and hear.
  • Work in all types of weather.

The annual salary range is posted for this position in Washington. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
