The Webb School of Engineering at High Point University seeks an experienced and dynamic individual to serve as Engineering Lab and Makerspace Manager. The Makerspace and Engineering Lab Manager reports to the Makerspace and Engineering Lab Director and the Dean of Engineering. The Makerspace and Engineering Lab Manager is responsible for the operational oversight of the university’s makerspaces and engineering laboratories. This individual will foster a dynamic and innovative learning environment that supports students, faculty, and researchers in hands-on project development, prototyping, and experiential learning. The Makerspace and Engineering Lab Manager will ensure that the space is safe, well-equipped, and effectively utilized to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and technological advancement.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Strategic Development

  • Assist the dean and makerspace director in implementing a vision for the makerspace and engineering labs that aligns with the university’s educational and research goals.
  • Foster a creative culture that encourages innovation, collaboration, and experimentation across disciplines.
  • Engage with faculty and researchers to integrate makerspace resources into curricula and research initiatives.
  • Work with faculty to ensure that the makerspace and engineering labs are properly equipped and support the teaching and learning objectives of the programs.

Facility & Equipment Management

  • Perform the maintenance, and upgrading of all makerspace and engineering lab equipment such as 3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, robotics tools, and electronic fabrication devices.
  • Help establish and enforce safety protocols, training procedures, and best practices for equipment use.
  • Help ensure the lab operates within budget constraints and advocate for funding opportunities and grants to support expansion and upgrades.
  • Perform inventory control

Finance and Budgeting

  • Work with the makerspace director and dean to ensuring financial responsibility and sustainability.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and resource optimization while maintaining the highest standards of service.

Inventory and Stock Control

  • Develop and implement inventory management systems to track consumables, tools, and equipment.
  • Manage the procurement and distribution of materials, ensuring that the makerspace is well-stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Ensure that departmental resources are properly secured and reserved for their designated uses.
  • Regularly assess supply levels and replenish stock efficiently to prevent shortages and downtime.

Student & Faculty Engagement

  • Develop and deliver training programs, workshops, and certifications for students, faculty, and staff on the use of tools, equipment, and software.
  • Provide mentorship and technical support to students and faculty working on projects.
  • Coordinate with student organizations, clubs, and external partners to maximize usage and impact of the makerspace.

Operations & Safety Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and university policies related to laboratory operations.
  • Implement risk management protocols and emergency response procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, safety training, and lab activities.

Community & Industry Partnerships

  • Establish partnerships with industry professionals, local businesses, and government agencies to create opportunities for students, such as internships, projects, and collaborative research.
  • Work with engineering department chairs and faculty to organize and host community outreach programs, competitions, and events to promote STEM education and innovation.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Design, Fabrication, or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience (or equivalent) in makerspace/lab management, engineering education, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of prototyping technologies, digital fabrication, electronics, and mechanical design.
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulations in a laboratory or workshop setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing training materials, workshops, or curriculum related to hands-on engineering and design.
  • Experience working in an academic environment or educational setting.
  • Experience with software tools such as Solid Works, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, MATLAB, LabView, or similar platforms.
  • Strong industry connections and experience in collaborative research or innovation projects.
