The department is governed by the Kansas State Board of Education, but the day-to-day administration of the agency is the responsibility of the Commissioner of Education, who is appointed by the Board of Education.

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

This position manages and designs the complex architecture required for successful operation of Kansas State Department of Education’s (KSDE) technical environment. Responsibilities include supervising and directing the daily operation of the network and system administration function, leading the design and implementation of KSDE’s enterprise architecture plan for enhancing and maintaining KSDE’s technical infrastructure and processes to meet the increased demands regarding information management and delivery.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

A technical, associates or bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and five years of experience in information systems design and operations management or eight years of equivalent experience in information systems design and operations management in a complex enterprise environment. Broad knowledge in networking protocols. Experience may be substituted for education as deemed relevant by the agency.

Preferred Skills and/or Qualifications:

  • Completion of advanced coursework or certification in Computer Science, Information Science or related area;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated leadership and management abilities as a senior consultant or manager;
  • Understanding and experience with the application development lifecycle as well as the principals of planning, designing and ongoing management of technical solutions in a complex environment;
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment, including developing and maintaining professional and team relationships;
  • Proven troubleshooting skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills; and
  • Certifications in networking and/or security.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in secondary technology education;
  • Secondary certification in Career and Technical Education; and
  • One year of experience in educational administration and curriculum assessment at the secondary, postsecondary or adult level.
