Job Summary

The School of Education at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for a one-year, full-time, non-tenure track Visiting Instructor position beginning in August 2025 with requirements to be physically present on the Hattiesburg campus. The Education faculty currently provide training to candidates in Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education. We are especially interested in candidates whose experience includes bridging research and practice in K-12 elementary and special education settings, with expertise in literacy and/or mathematics, assessment, inclusive education, and clinical supervision. We aim to recruit applicants who will support the School of Education’s programs including a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, a Masters of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction (Elementary Education) and the Master’s degree in Special Education. Program delivery includes face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teaching and mentoring students.
  2. Supervising elementary and/or special education clinical experiences.
  3. Demonstrating an understanding of cultural competence.
  4. Contributing to the mission of the School and profession through service activities.
  5. Collaborating with colleagues on program development and enhancement.
  6. Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

Advanced degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or closely related field (by August 2025).

Two (2) or more years of full-time teaching experience with standards-based curriculum within elementary and/or special education settings.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate with diverse groups of individuals in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work with a diverse team in multiple settings.
  • Experience with online learning platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

An earned doctoral degree

Experience leading others in implementing evidence-based instructional practices in settings with students who have high incidence disabilities

Experience with special education literacy or mathematics

Experience incorporating technology in instruction and assessment

Evidence of creating equitable and culturally-responsive education experiences
