Engineering Manager - Data & Analytics

Maersk

Maersk is improving life for all by integrating the world. From the farm to your refrigerator, or the factory to your wardrobe, we are developing software solutions to support our customer needs from one end of the supply chain to the other. Technology is taking center stage in enabling our customers to trade globally and we are building our core products in-house.

Join us to help re-think what technology can do and support our global logistics business with high-quality software solutions that enable us to reduce our environmental impact and provide a better experience to our customers through improved automation and decision making.

Your new job:

You will join the Data & Analytics organization within the Transported by Maersk technology portfolio, providing data and insights to help Maersk go from a booked container to delivery at the customer's doorstep. We leverage high-quality real-time data at scale with analytical predictions and decision making under uncertainty to deliver better customer outcomes and higher operational efficiency. We combine our data products with advanced optimization and simulation frameworks to produce solutions for automated data-driven decision-making under uncertainty and integrate it into user workflows. We offer a diverse and highly collaborative work environment with flexibility to suit your life. There are a lot of interesting challenges ahead and we need your help.

Your new team:

We are a cross-functional organisation of about 50 platform and data engineers and AIML scientists working together to build reliable, performant and maintainable analytics software, with quality required for operational decision making at enterprise scale.

As an Engineering Manager you will lead a team of 8-12 engineers and data scientists located in India and Europe, responsible for real-time data and AIML products supporting our global operations and execution. You will coach, mentor and grow your team, and champion a metrics-first, experiment-driven mindset to ensure decisions are evidence-based and continuously improved.

We are accountable and proud of our work. Our culture is informal and built on respectful collaboration, experimentation, and continuous improvement. We spend time together at team events and hackathons to form a stronger, more collaborative unit and to inspire and grow each other.

We use modern engineering practices, do pair-programming, and take on full ownership and responsibility for what we build. We primarily use technologies such as pyspark, flink and python, rely heavily on open source and encourage upstream contributions. We deploy what we build using Github Actions onto Kubernetes clusters operated in the Microsoft Azure cloud. To give a sense of scale, we deploy to production >20x/day, operate around 2000 pipelines and manage 800TB of storage.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure business objectives are translated into clear technical roadmaps and measurable success criteria. Work with relevant stakeholders to find the right solutions to the right problems at the right time.
  • Have a continuous focus on providing business value, while ensuring technical sustainability (including maintainability, reliability, performance, availability and cost).
  • Hire, onboard, retain and develop world-class talent and celebrate and promote their successes.
  • Promote and drive adoption of outstanding engineering and analytics technology in the team.
  • Be the “glue”, willing to help to resolve unforeseen problems in and around the team when they appear and provide clarity upward and context downward across time zones.

We are looking for:

You have a solid technical background in data, analytics or engineering and exposure to architecture. This may be your first leadership role or you have experience leading small engineering or analytics teams tackling data-rich problems.

  • You are collaborative by nature, care about others and are a general force for good.
  • You are motivated by working on hard problems, and ensuring that the work you and your team does provide maximum value for our customers and the company.
  • You solve problems end-to-end, considering what is required to solve it and if the business process is even ready for a technical solution or if it needs revision.
  • You care about a great engineering culture, have an agile mindset and a learning mentality.
  • Strong sense of accountability and bias for action — you remove blockers, deliver results, and own the outcome.
