IT/OT Systems Engineer, GxP Manufacturing and Labs

Moderna Therapeutics

The Role:

Joining Moderna offers the unique opportunity to be part of a pioneering team that's revolutionizing medicine through mRNA technology, with a diverse pipeline of development programs across various diseases.

As an employee, you'll be part of a continually growing organization, working alongside exceptional colleagues and strategic partners worldwide, contributing to global health initiatives.

Moderna's commitment to advancing the technological frontier of mRNA medicines ensures a challenging and rewarding career experience, with the potential to make a significant impact on patients' lives worldwide.

We are seeking an experienced and versatile IT/OT Systems Engineer to support and maintain both the infrastructure and application layers of our manufacturing environment. This role is ideal for a technically adept professional who thrives at the intersection of Information Technology and Operational Technology—able to switch from troubleshooting server and network issues one day, to resolving MES or DeltaV system problems on the manufacturing floor the next. You’ll work fluidly between Digital Core teams—such as cybersecurity and enterprise technologies—and frontline collaborators including operators and plant management.

As a member of our global team, you will play a key role in ensuring the reliable operation of systems critical to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), spanning infrastructure (networks, wi-fi, virtual servers, backups) and the applications running on them (Syncade, DeltaV, PI, BMS, Thin Manager, analytical instruments). The systems you support will impact Moderna’s manufacturing sites and labs across multiple countries.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Collaborating with Digital teams to design and execute effective IT/OT integrations that align with world-class scientific research and operations
  • Providing recommendations to the business on IT/OT solutions that meet both immediate and strategic objectives
  • Ensuring technical considerations—such as change management, infrastructure integrity, and systems integration—are addressed for all Manufacturing and Lab Systems projects
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting infrastructure, including Windows servers, VMware virtual machines, network architecture, backup/recovery platforms, and domain services like Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP
  • Supporting key manufacturing applications such as Syncade, DeltaV, OSI PI, BMS, HMIs, Solo VPE, and other analytical instruments and label printers

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Partnering closely with automation engineers, lab engineers, scientists, and operations teams to support the lifecycle of manufacturing and lab systems, guided by clear SLAs
  • Supporting compliance with GxP requirements and the IQ/OQ/PQ validation process for computerized systems
  • Participating in the development and validation of business continuity and disaster recovery plans
  • Assisting in the design and troubleshooting of network topologies specific to manufacturing and lab environments
  • Implementing and supporting cybersecurity controls and applications across critical systems

The key Moderna Mindsets you’ll need to succeed in the role:

  • “We behave like owners. The solutions we’re building go beyond any job description.”
  • This mindset will empower you to work autonomously and take initiative across both IT and OT domains, knowing that the integrity of manufacturing systems depends on your proactive support and long-term solutions.
  • “We digitize everywhere possible using the power of code to maximize our impact on patients.”
  • Your technical contributions will directly support the scalability and reliability of digital manufacturing infrastructure, enabling global delivery of high-quality mRNA therapeutics through automation and integration.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Industrial Engineering, physical science or related field or relevant experience
  • 6+ years of experience working with IT/OT infrastructure in manufacturing, lab systems, control systems and building management systems
  • Experience with IT/OT implementation with DCS, MES, BMS, PLC, OPC, HPLC, GC, LIMs, lab analyzers
  • Prior experience working for a Pharmaceutical company required

  • Experience working with Cybersecurity endpoint protection applications (Crowdstrike, Symantec, McAfee, Carbon Black, etc.)
  • Experience working with infrastructure tools (Dynatrace, Pager Duty, Splunk)
  • Understanding of network routing, switching and firewall concepts

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Creative, analytical, and strong problem-solving skills and a whatever it takes’ attitude
  • Ability to liaison between IT, Automation, Engineering, Manufacturing, QC, and QA teams
  • Work independently, with limited direction, to achieve expected results
  • Adapt well under pressure to any given situation that may arise, in a professional manner and with positive results, in support of a multi-location, 24x7 environment
  • Take the initiative to drive and effect change in a dynamic, high standards environment while maintaining a positive approach with management and peers
  • Operates with a highly collaborative work style, and possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build successful professional working relationships
