Job Description

The Senior Associate / Associate General Counsel for Litigation & Compliance provides advice to Syracuse University’s 13 academic units and its Centers for Research and Scholarship on matters concerning litigation, regulatory and compliance matters. This individual will be a part of a collaborative, professional team focused on delivering comprehensive high-level legal advice to a very sophisticated client base. Will serve as a trusted legal advisor to the General Counsel, other members of the senior administration, and key faculty and staff positions. Will proactively identify legal risk to the University and offer creative and effective solutions to mitigate such risks and to protect the organization from undue legal exposure, liability, and financial loss. Will rely on experience and judgment to provide sound, practical and creative legal advice that supports and is consistent with the strategic and operational objectives of Syracuse University. Will participate with external counsel in defense of pending or threatened litigation, regulatory investigations and similar matters (including by drafting and signing legal papers and appearing in legal proceedings). Will manage time and effort efficiently to address the most serious legal and business risks facing Syracuse University and work to proactively address those risks.

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctorate from ABA accredited law school.
  • Ten plus (10+) years of legal experience in an academic institution, business or related organization, or relevant law firm experience.
  • Licensed to practice law in New York or eligible for admission within twelve (12) months.
  • Licensed in good standing without any instances of suspension, revocation, censure or other adverse events in any jurisdiction.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Significant legal experience advising smart and exacting clients.
  • Superior legal negotiating, drafting, and presentation skills.
  • Organized self-starter with strong work ethic and a ‘can do’ attitude; a quick study with ability to manage deadlines.
  • High moral and ethical standards that reflect honesty, integrity and reliability.
  • Must be detail oriented and deadline driven.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to understand and convey complex legal principles in readily understandable terms to senior administrators and faculty.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional collaborative relationships with diverse groups across an organization, as well as stakeholders and community members.
  • Capable of preparing/reviewing/editing legal memos, filings, pleadings, and other documents.
  • Proficiency in conducting legal research using LEXIS/NEXIS, Westlaw, or other online research tools.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Senior Vice President/General Counsel and the Deputy General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel will manage and advise the university in:

  • Litigation and pre-litigation disputes and regulatory investigations.
  • NCAA compliance in collaboration with the University’s Chief Compliance Officer and Athletics Compliance.
  • Regulatory compliance, in collaboration with the University’s Chief Compliance Officer.
  • Defending and prosecuting lawsuits on behalf of the university.
  • Advising the university on labor & employment matters.
  • Institutional compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
  • Training and education on legal and regulatory compliance
  • Development of efficient and cost-effective programs for retention and management of external law firms
