POSITION TITLE: ASSISTANT HEAD OF SCHOOL

The Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers (EMK) seeks an exceptional Assistant Head of School who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders. Kennedy Academy teachers and leaders are committed to the vision of high expectations for achievement, equal access to high levels of instruction, the achievement of academic proficiency for all students, and the closing of the achievement gap among subgroups within the schools.

Kennedy Academy is a Horace Mann In-District Charter High School. It is a college preparatory and vocational high school for Boston students exploring careers in health and health-related careers. The Academy provides a supportive learning environment that promotes respect and embraces diversity. Students will attain the life skills needed to become productive and positive members of society. Kennedy Academy is an excellent place for those who seek to work in an environment that supports their creativity and innovation and respects their skills and abilities as an educator.

In addition, over the next five years, Kennedy Academy will double in size, add new health career pathways, college courses, work-based learning, and offer graduates access to good-paying careers at Mass General Brigham thanks to Bloomberg Philanthropies' $38 million grant, which marks the largest philanthropic investment in Boston Public Schools history.

RESPONSIBILITIES

General Description

EMK seeks visionary and dynamic individuals to serve as educational leaders in our schools. We are seeking a highly motivated, exceptional, results-oriented professional committed to high performance and achievement standards for both students and educators.

The Assistant Head of School will maintain student discipline and manage the business aspects of the school to assist the Head of School in creating an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the supervision of all staff and assumes the duties of the Head of School

when he/she is not on the premises.

  • Implements the Code of Discipline and maintains the safety and security of the building and grounds.
  • Supervises students' arrival and departure; supervises students' behavior in the common areas of the building and grounds.
  • Seeks funding to enhance the cultural and academic programs at the school.
  • Uses data to guide academic goals to assist the Head of School in preparing

the Accountability Plan document.

  • Assists the Head of School in his/her managerial duties including:
    • Supervises maintenance of the building and grounds
    • Coordinates purchases and delivery of supplies and equipment
    • Supervises maintenance of personnel and student records
    • Prepares reports and statistics of school operations
    • Prepares and maintains the master schedule within planning parameters established by the Head of School
  • Supervises substitute teachers, including arranging for coverage and ensuring that substitute folders are up to date and available for monitoring and evaluating performance.
  • Assists the Head of School in planning activities, including coordinating curriculum,

instruction, student, volunteer, parent activities, and student support services.

  • Engages the wider community to support school goals.
  • Assumes other related duties as requested by the Head of School

Qualifications - Required

  • Education: Master's Degree in Education or related field.
  • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Massachusetts license for School Principal/Assistant Principal (grades specific).
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills, and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and parents.
  • Ability to establish a multi-cultural atmosphere that enhances individual growth and promotes a positive self-image.

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Teaching experience in an urban, K-12 educational setting.
  • Experience as a school administrator.
  • Experience in Grant writing and fundraising.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
  • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.

EMK has a longer school day through the "Schedule A" Expanded Learning Time (ELT) Agreement. The employee will be required to adhere to the work conditions, including calendar, schedule, and flexibility established by the School. Common planning time, program, department and committee meetings, and professional development occur on Wednesdays, generally between 2pm- 4pm.
