By joining our Division of Structural Design, Engineering Geology and Field Service Branch , Drilling and Instrumentation Section as a Transportation Engineering Technologist II in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to participate in field activities for data collection in support of geotechnical investigations and perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Participate in field activities for a sounding crew, ensuring accurate data collection for geotechnical investigations.
  • Support operation of surveying and sounding equipment to obtain geotechnical test results supporting the design of highway structures and transportation facilities.
  • Prepare technical reports and maintain comprehensive project documentation for small engineering projects.
  • Utilize computers, gINT/geotechnical database software, and iPad-based applications to manage and analyze geotechnical data.
  • Drive large trucks with trailers and operate specialized geotechnical testing equipment and heavy machinery to access and test various project sites.
  • Conduct field surveys, including incidental topography and mapping, to support geotechnical engineering projects.
  • Reduce, check, and verify survey notes to ensure accuracy and completeness of field data.

Skills and Expectations include but are not limited to the following:

  • Hands-on experience operating surveying, sounding, and geotechnical testing equipment in field environments.
  • Proficiency in preparing technical reports and maintaining project documentation.
  • Demonstrates ability to safely drive large trucks, trailers, and operate heavy machinery in support of engineering fieldworks
  • Familiarity with conducting field surveys, topography mapping, and reducing survey notes for engineering projects.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development, including attendance of training sessions and willingness to learn advanced technical skills under supervision.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, computer science, data science, geology, earth science, industrial technology, industrial drafting, design technology or construction technology; . OR Graduate with an associate's degree in Engineering Technology with completion of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Two years of engineering-related experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: 1. Possess a valid EIT certification issued by the Kentucky State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors OR 2. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree OR an associate degree in an engineering field OR 3. High school OR 4. High school

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: 1. Must have two years of engineering-related experience with the first education option above; OR 2. Must have four years of engineering-related experience with the second education option above; OR 3. Must have eight years of engineering-related experience in which case related technical or vocational training will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four years with the third education option above; OR 4. Must have six years of bridge inspection experience under the supervision of a Qualified InspectionTeam Leader, plus successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course with the fourth education option above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possess and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites and other types of work zones which requires the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
