Job Description

The Librarian I, under general supervision, performs tasks in one or more functional areas within the library.

Responsibilities:

  • Information Literacy and Research Help: Providing research assistance and to library patrons, including students, faculty, staff, and community members. Identifying and interpreting user needs. Providing reference to library patrons through telephone, texting, chat, virtual, and face-to-face. Staffing the reference desk in the Special Collections and Archives department as required. Assisting with locating materials, and information resources in all formats. Providing readers' advisory, and computer, database and referral services. Keep up to date with the knowledge of effectively using library databases, and finding aids. Participating in planning face-to-face and virtual reference service. Compiling course guides and research guides. Helping to compile reference service statistics daily, monthly and yearly. Assisting patrons in the use of Archival records and files; and Special Collections as needed. Preparing, developing, and teaching information literacy instruction sessions to users be it through face to face, online, to individuals, or to groups in a classroom. Collaborating with faculty to integrate information literacy and research instruction into courses and course assignments across the curriculum. Working effectively with students, faculty, staff and library patrons. Keeping up with library instruction trends and reference service in academic libraries especially as it relates to Archives and Special collections. Undertaking library orientation sessions for University College, Library Tours, developing website content, and print materials. Preparing online and physical instructional materials, including handouts, videos and LibGuides. Participating in assessing of information literacy and library instruction services. Conducting records management training workshops.
  • Collection Development & Collection Processing: Accessioning, processing collections, and performing archival appraisal when applicable Coordinating the transfer of university records scheduled for retention by the archives. Developing and implementing processing plans for manuscripts and archival materials in formats. Identifying collection processing priorities. Cataloging, and creating finding aids in accordance with DACS. Reviewing existing digital content to improve discoverability Creating and maintaining special collections and archives, including records, files, documents, manuscripts, artifacts, etc., in all formats and media. Assisting in coordinating and implementing grant funded projects designed to improve archival conditions. Assisting in developing grant proposals to fund archival projects. Providing archival preservation and arrangement of documents and artifacts of enduring value. Reviewing and selecting print and electronic materials for library acquisition in your assigned liaison subject areas. Assisting with selecting and weeding of collections where necessary. Monitoring and evaluating physical and digital storage needs special and archival collections. Maintaining a collecting scope that adheres to the Collection Development policy. Closely working with the Scholarly Communication Librarian for digitization of content. Overseeing proper storage and preservation of Archives and special collections. Creating and maintaining forms for managing the Records Management and Archives Program. Participating in recovery plans in case there is a disaster involving Archives and Special Collections. Assisting in planning, scheduling, and implementing records retention work flows.
  • Digital Humanities: Being proactive in coordinating information about digital humanities scholarship on campus in order to connect scholars across the disciplines and facilitate interdisciplinary conversation and collaboration. Providing guidance in identifying and evaluating current and emerging digital tools and methodologies supporting humanities scholars. Providing research consultations for students and faculty members engaged with digital humanities projects. Providing training on digital scholarship tools and techniques. Planning and supporting digital humanities events on campus.
  • Outreach, & Student Supervision: Communicating and interacting with the university’s records creators and custodians to determine record and information management needs. Participating in the recruiting and supervising of student works, interns, and volunteers in the Special Collections and Archives Department. Developing and participating in the library's outreach services including tours, social media, curating physical and online exhibitions and the display of archival materials among others. Collaborating with the Head of Special Collections and Archives and other entities within the university in fundraising efforts (grant writing and donor relations). Collaborating with library staff, other campus units, and outside agencies and organization to promote visibility of Special Collections and Archives. Establishing and developing collaborative and productive working relationships with the community, faculty, staff and students. Assisting with compiling statistics, and reports. Participating in training of student workers in Special Collections and Archives department.
  • Service, Professional Development, & Other Duties: Participating and serving on Library, university, and/or library professional association committees. Attending meetings and assist with library events and programs at PVAMU. Pursuing opportunities for professional development, including workshops, conferences, seminars, and specialized training classes. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS) or a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an American Library Association(ALA) - accredited program with a concentration in Archival Studies or relevant experience in lieu of academic training.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Knowledge of traditional and electronic resources.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, presentation, and research skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use basic print and electronic reference tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience working in an academic library archive.
  • Archival certification.
  • Ability to process collections and make finding aids that are DACS compliant; Society of American Archives standards/guidelines.
  • Ability to manage archival collections.
  • Having interest and drive to undertake and participate in digital humanities projects.
  • Ability to effectively teach library instruction sessions to individuals and groups.
  • Experience creating, research guides, tutorials, and library instruction materials.
  • Serve as a member of intra-and-inter library committees, PVAMU campus committee organizations.
  • Ability to participate in state and national level professional library conferences.
  • Outreach to the various colleges and groups on campus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent public service skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff and library patrons.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and apply skills quickly.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
