Airbus Netherlands B.V. is looking for a Structures Systems Engineer to join our Product Engineering Team based in Leiden, The Netherlands. The ideal candidate will have experience in leading the development of load carrying aerospace structures and preferably for launch vehicles.

Airbus Netherlands designs and builds structures for European launchers serving the commercial and institutional satellite markets. The company also plays a crucial role on a variety of missions funded by ESA, NASA and commercial institutions to design and develop Solar Arrays used to power satellites, spacecraft and their payloads.

You will be part of the Product Engineering team that leads the development and deployment of our structures for the Ariane and Vega launchers as well as for our Solar Arrays. You will be working in close collaboration with Lead Engineers, Design and Analysis Specialists, the Materials & Processes department, our Assembly & Integration as well as Production Teams and, of course, with fellow Systems Engineers.

Your challenges/tasks:

  • As Systems Engineer for launcher structures, you will be the technical lead from the proposal preparation phase and the contract negotiations to the execution of contracted projects in the phases A, B and C/D, including the associated external reviews. This shall include the definition and costing of detailed work package descriptions used for the planning of each phase.
  • Among other tasks, you will manage the definition and verification of requirements and define the development approach leading to qualification. You will deliver technical designs and system performance calculations and you will be the technical interface with customers, partners and suppliers.
  • In order to achieve these goals you will guide a team of technical specialists and be accountable for all technical output (documentation, models, etc) made by your team such that the technical requirements, the schedule and the cost targets are satisfied.
  • Additionally, you will support product/business development in defining the launcher structures strategy.
  • Your understanding of lightweight aerospace structural design and the behaviour of structures subjected to thermo-mechanical loading will be used to guide team members and make responsible decisions when different opinions emerge.
  • You shall lead the finite element modeling and analysis of the company’s launcher structures, which are optimised in terms of mass, cost and production / assembly requirements. The highest reliability of the Product shall be assured using appropriate Design tools such as FEMAP, NASTRAN, HyperSizer, ESACRACK.
  • You shall ensure the effective reporting of the engineering work in technical documents that satisfy the needs of the configuration control, design reviews, the treatment of NCR’s during production and enquiries from the customers.
  • You shall act as an efficient spring-board for future developments in the launcher structures domain.

  • Conversation in Dutch is a plus, but not required.
  • Available 40 hours per week.

Requirements:

  • Masters Degree in Engineering (Aeronautical of Mechanical) with a strong curriculum emphasis on structural analysis of lightweight (aerospace) structures.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as Systems Engineer, preferably in the aerospace / Space sector.
  • A strong background in mechanical analysis (strength, stability and stiffness) and testing, managing work packages and leading teams as well as a proven track record of effective interaction with internal project management as well as customers, partners and suppliers.
  • A strong understanding of coupled load path analysis principles.
  • Familiarity with NASA, ESA, Ariane or aerospace mechanical engineering standards.
  • Knowledge of the Finite Element Method and Analysis of structures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, & PowerPoint).
  • Nice-to-have; knowledge of Python coding
  • Nice-to-have; experience working with Google Suite (GMail, Docs, Sheets, Slides).
  • Residency in (or willing to move to) the Netherlands.
