Overview
Overhaul and Repair Engineering (Department 474) is a multi-disciplined team that consists of Systems, Structural, and Electrical engineering groups. The team provides written technical direction, deck-plate engineering support, and planning support to Shipyard Operations for maintenance, modernization and repairs on all classes of US Navy nuclear submarines. The team works primarily on delivered, in-service ships and occasionally on ships in new construction. The team supports work accomplished at the EB Groton shipyard as well as off-site shipyard or submarine base locations.
Department 474 System Engineers are responsible for developing technical work documents, providing technical direction and oversight, and resolving shipboard conditions associated with a variety of electrical, structural, and mechanical submarine systems and components.
Specific tasks required by a D474 Systems Engineer include, but are not limited to:
- Planning of submarine maintenance and modernization work including development of work breakdown structures and technical work documents
- Interpretation and translation of shipbuilding specifications, maintenance requirements, and contractual requirements into clear and concise technical work documents
- Providing deck plate support to shipyard trades and resolution of emergent issues during execution of technical work documents
- Understanding maintenance criteria, submarine piping and mechanical drawings as we all machining and weld processes
- Development of technical rationale to support approval of non-conforming conditions
The flexibility to work overtime, including weekends to support critical work evolutions and schedule needs is required. Willingness to support extended off-site assignments and/or second shift is preferred, but not required.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
- 8+ years of postgraduate engineering experience
- 4+ years of experience working with specifications for delivered/in-service ships, delivered ship work instructions (TWDs), ship maintenance criteria, work control & testing requirements, and requirements for configuration management, design approval authority, and certification of delivered ship work
- Experience in technical lead roles interfacing with civilian and military oversight within US NAVY fleet support organizations
Preferred:
- Experience supporting both modernization/ship alteration and overhaul availabilities.
- Experience with supporting certification for a delivered ship availability.
- Active DoD Secret or Top Secret Clearance
Skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills and be able to effectively collaborate with a wide range of internal and external organizations at multiple levels of management.
- Candidates must be highly motivated and well organized with strong project management skills, and be capable of working both independently and in a team environment.
- Must have a strong fundamental understanding of engineering concepts and basic understanding of relationship between electronic, mechanical/piping, and structural systems/components.
