This position will be filled at either the Technologists 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), we solve national security challenges through simultaneous excellence! Plutonium Capability Transuranic Waste Management group's (NPI-6) Acceptable Knowledge team is looking for a highly motivated Research Technologist to perform technical work requiring advanced knowledge in the areas of science or engineering. Projects will usually require technical depth and understanding and contribute to the development, implementation, and completion of project objectives. NPI-6 provides ample opportunities to learn new skillsets while maintaining a supportive environment when challenges arise. How we do our jobs is just as important as what we do! Our team members comply with a variety of nuclear management related requirements; they work independently on challenging concurrent projects requiring close cooperation, adaptability, initiative, and willingness to provide support wherever needed to meet LANL National Security Mission.
The person filling this position will be required to work non-normal business hours.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Regulations: Demonstrated record of safety and security compliance. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding/adherence to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to the work and work area to which assigned.
Skills: Experience in the development of techniques and the fulfillment of research goals. Experience contributing to the development of new principles and concepts, specifications for project implementation, and verifying that the end product meets expectations and requirements. Knowledge of scientific principles, experimental processes, mathematical formulas, computations and data gathering methods. Demonstrated knowledge of standard principles, concepts and techniques in area of technical specialty.
Leadership/Followership: Ability to work under collaborative direction and guidance toward predetermined goals and objectives. Experience supervising some portion of research projects, preparing research documentation, and providing peer-review of the documentation of other members of the team. Experience contributing to or co-authoring scientific publications.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Skills/Experience: Demonstrated depth of knowledge in practice acquired by experience, certification, and/or formal education. Resolves problems of moderately complex scope requiring review of a variety of factors. May co-author publications.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.
DOE Order 426.2: Requires High School Diploma (or equivalent, i.e., GED)

Work Schedule: This position will require 24/7 coverage, which will involve working a weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
