Description

The Broadcast Engineer for the Office of Strategic Communications & Civic Engagement is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of all equipment used in the production and transmission of the City’s broadcast signals. This role ensures the reliability and quality of broadcasts by managing and troubleshooting technical issues across various platforms, including television, radio, and digital streaming. The Broadcast Engineer works closely with production teams, IT staff, and other technical personnel to ensure smooth operations.

Additionally, the Broadcast Engineer will oversee the Public Access Studio based in the Main Library and will work with Library staff to support community producers’ use of that space.

Duties include but are not limited to

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

  • Technical Support: Provide technical support for live broadcasts, pre-recorded shows, and special events. Monitor broadcasts to ensure consistent, high-quality audio and video signals.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Install, maintain, and repair broadcast and transmission equipment, including cameras, mixers, servers, and other related hardware. Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime.
  • System Integration: Design, configure, and integrate new broadcast systems and technologies, ensuring compatibility with existing infrastructure. Assist in the implementation of new broadcasting platforms and tools.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly to minimize disruptions to broadcasts.
  • Compliance: Ensure all broadcast operations comply with FCC regulations and other relevant standards. Maintain accurate logs and records of equipment, maintenance schedules, and compliance checks.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with production teams, IT staff, and other engineers to support the technical needs of the organization.
  • Project Management: Oversee technical projects, including upgrades, installations, and system overhauls. Manage timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

  • Broadcast Systems: In-depth knowledge of analog and digital broadcast systems.
  • IT Networking: Knowledge of IT infrastructure as it relates to broadcast workflows (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, VLANs).
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in the operation and maintenance of broadcast equipment, including video and audio routing systems, transmitters, encoders, and automation systems. Familiarity with IP-based broadcast systems and digital media workflows is a plus.
  • Maintenance Skills: Proficient in developing maintenance schedules and performing routine inspections of equipment.
  • Communication: Strong ability to communicate complex technical information to non-technical team members and collaborate with IT, editorial, and production teams.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Availability: Willingness to work flexible hours. On-call availability for emergency situations.
  • Adaptability: Able to learn and apply new technologies such as IP-based broadcast and cloud-based production systems.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in broadcast engineering or a related technical field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications: SBE (Society of Broadcast Engineers) certification or equivalent is preferred but not required.
