Our innovative systems include high efficient and large scale platform built on Amazon's cloud computing infrastructure. For this position you will have a strong background in OO design with C++/Java. Experience working with WebServices, XML, Apache services is desired. Linux system development experience is a plus. Equally important to these specific skills is the ability to multi-task, quickly adapt to new development environments and changing business requirements, learn new systems, create reliable/maintainable code, and find creative and scalable solutions to difficult problems.

Key job responsibilities

As a Software Development Manager, you will define and drive the technical strategy for building Search experiences, leading a team of engineers to innovate at scale. You will collaborate across science, product, and design teams to deliver next-generation solutions that enhance shopping journeys for millions of customers.

A day in the life

  • Thinking big and collaborating with product leadership and business stakeholders to define strategy and long-term vision.
  • Owning the end-to-end technical strategy and delivery roadmap.
  • Defining initiative goals and owning all associated metrics, using data to drive decisions.
  • Architecting scalable, resilient AI-driven systems that can adapt across multiple product categories and shopping missions.
  • Partnering closely with engineers to develop the best technical designs and scalable solutions.
  • Managing the full software development life cycle, from design and development through launch and operations.
  • Leading and mentoring a team of engineers and applied scientists, building a culture of high technical standards, innovation, and ownership.
  • Reporting regularly on development progress, quality, operations, and system performance to senior leadership.
  • Maintaining a relentless focus on operational excellence, system reliability, and rapid iteration to meet customer needs.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
